Did list Brighton.org.uk for this sale earlier but now withdrawn.

Just wondering what value forum members would put on this.

For background, Brighton is a major UK city and South Coast resort.

"Brighton is one of the most vibrant, colourful and creative cities in Europe. Cosmopolitan, compact, energetic, unique, fun, lively, historic, young, exotic and free-spirited, it's a city like no other."

"Millions of travellers around the world have spoken, bringing Brighton in at number 2 in the favourite UK destinations category on Tripadvisor, as chosen by European travellers."

8 million annual tourists. 1 hour from London. £408 million estimated annual spend.

Population 160 thousand. A major working and living population in addition to tourist visitors. Major employees including Amex and Apple.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Stephen.

nice name but mid £££ tops.

you've already got established sites to compete against the in serps brighton.co.uk, visitbrighton.com etc - all the time and effort to get it into a position of monetization is not worth it.

Even with a good serp position you be lucky to get a hotelier to advertise on a .org.uk (which has ZERO credability when facing your average b&b owner) - hard enough on a .co.uk.

I know that you feel because its a well know place it must be worth ££££'s becaus eof all the potential when developed but it will never happen, that is why imho its worth a few £££ as a punt for somneone to tinker about with who has some sapre time maybe.

Are you saying that the average b&b owner actually has a preference over which domain name extensions they advertise on ? let alone know what they mean ?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...uk&rlz=1R2GGLL_en&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Seeing as there is 5.3million results for b&b's using .org.uk domain names for their OWN websites, I don't think I agree with this statement at all

Totally disagree with julian's comments about advertising on a orguk name.. All they care about is getting enquiries/bookings. :)

I would say £1000 easy and quite possibly pay that if I had it, excellent opportunity to make big cash.

And ofcourse B&Bs would advertise on a .org.uk just ask Gav aka virtualwords :p

so how many of you run geo sites and if so have tried selling a listing on one to hoteliers - let alone a .org.uk (yes some will advertise on a .org.uk)

and to say all they care about is getting bookins is reminiscent of someone who knows fa about tourism industry online.

..to base the monetisation of a site based on 5 million .org.uk owners is so far out of reality its unreal - if you need me to explain why then..

..if you can read between the lines in what I said is that brighton.org.uk is a decent name - mid £££ not much more for me - thats my opinion.

so.. if its worth so much more please explain how an why.. anf please for the love of god don't come back to me with an estimation based on thaT newb google exact tool.

You are so right Julian. Thank you for pointing out my stupidity, I don't know what I was thinking in making that post pointing out 5 million results for bed and breakfasts using .org.uk domains for their own website.

I will never think of a .org.uk domain and monetisation in the same way again.

So I assuming you basing your valuation of mid £xxx on the monetisation of the name by selling advertising to hoteliers ? If that is right, you are going down the same route of failure as the original owners of loans.co.uk who owned the best domain in the uk for the entire uk loan market, yet only monetised it with secured loans, which I would guess was less than 5% of what their traffic was looking for.

To base a valuation on only one way of making from a domain, is even further from reality.

I'm not sure if the original Julian was taken away by aliens for testing or something, but the Julian that has been posting on here in the last 6 months seems to be very bitter and negative all the time.

I preferred the old Julian who was pleasant to talk to, and easy to get on with :)

fuckarooney...

We run a site for a popular uk tourist destination and have developed for the last 2 years. Now ranking top of page 2, it's not a geo name however we have secured the .org.uk for high £££

It is difficult to get people advertising... But worth it if you can secure number 1 position. The top ranking competitor charges a minimum of £1,000 for a listing on their site!

Some of the competition has been established for over 10 years with a hypenated version of the location name taking top position.

Simply by owning an undeveloped .org.uk or .co.uk won't get you ranking against strong established competitors.

In my opinion the longer a geo domain is left undeveloped the more work will be needed to catch up with competitor rankings. That said if we had developed our .org.uk domain on the current site I'm sure it would be at the top of page one...

We also have a hypenated geo ranking top of page one with a 5 page site however there are only a couple of other developed competitor sites.

Interesting stuff, apologies for the grammar typing on my iPhone.

Although people seam to think .org.uk are wanted end £ sales figures are to the contrary…

That apart you can list them high and that what should count …? Brighton has a high density of businesses involved in media, particularly digital or "new media" referred to as "Silicon Beach” Fesitivals, shops, restaurants hotels, business, Taxi firms etc that all want to stand out from the crowd..? Phone, email, pigeon post every single one at least twice..? Place ad in the local papers. You could start with big letters that its for sale on the site…? Hype hype hype it (the more effort the better return)

See what comes back your making it known the name is available and if your lucky create a buzz?
Brighton is one of the few places in the country it should sell (even a org.uk????) Although you could develop the site stiff compertition there ? Plenty of firms there that could do that if you want to sell it maybe let them do the work…?

I guess this created an interesting debate - thanks for everybody's thoughts so far.

Update - I got an acceptable offer on the domain and decided to sell.

Stephen.

Yes well done.

I really like .org.uk for geos.

If I had the cash spare I would have made you an offer on this, but have other projects on the go at the minute.

Hope you got a good sale from it and it is put to good use.

Regards

Gav
