I am interested in purchasing a dot ie domain name and wanted to know if I am allowed to do so.

My business is located in the UK (England) though I was born in Northern Ireland if that helps. I guess I could get a family member to buy it if needs be as all my family still live in Northern Ireland.

Basically a website I am making is for the UK only and I wanted to create a clone for just the Irish market and use the .ie extension.

If I am able to buy it, can anyone recommend somewhere to buy it from. All the ones I have seen so far are like 90 odd euros a year!!

Thanks

Paul

as far as i am aware if you are not located in Ireland you need to be able to prove you have business there.
or try go down the route with your family but they need to prove claim to the name,eg operating a business which would use the domain name in question.
I know they have relaxed the process alot over the last couple of years.
In the early 2000's you were not allowed to reg any generics which slowed down the uptake, its different now.
still abit pricey compared to the dot uk names

If you have a registered business / company in the UK you *should* be able to register the corresponding IE domain, however you will need to provide proof of your intent to trade with Ireland. Ideally if you already had an Irish client or supplier that would suffice.

As for pricing, you'll find it varies from around the EUR20 mark upwards.

Thanks for the advice!!

I do already have one client based in Northern Ireland whom I developed their website and host their site - would that suffice?

Cheers

Doubtful to be honest, but you could try it..

IE is for the Republic, so while a Northern Irish company can get an IE domain very easily I'm not 100% sure how the registry would view that as forming a link for a UK company.

When you say doubtful, who makes the final decision?

So just to clarify things regarding .ie domains, does the current legislation mean that someone who lives in Ireland can not just come up with a website idea and buy the domain name for it? For example if someone decided to invent Guinness Ice Cream and wanted to buy guinnessicecream.ie, would it not be possible if they were just an individual, ignoring copyright problems of course:)

To start with in common with most ccTLDs the rules are rules NOT legislation.

You can invent names as much as you like, but unless you can show a connection with the name you won't get it. (full rules are on IE Domain Registry)

As long as they were "trading as" Guiness Ice Cream ie. it's legit and above board etc., they could get it, but they'd have to show proof that they were producing the product (or intended to)

Thanks for the reply Blacknight

I guess the Irish system prevents cyber-squatting then to a certain extent.
