I've been a member on Acorn since 2006. The domaining world is a very different place these days. There was a time when I, like many other members, used to generate a large number of sales by posting on here. Now, it would seem, things have changed. I get more sales and follow up leads from DL. I even shift names there that have been previously listed here at near silly prices. I guess its just a case of end users not visiting here maybe, and AD is now primarily seller to reseller, even more so that back in the 'good old days'.

Pretty much the same across Acorndomains and Domainlore, the buyers are resellers predominately so prices reflect this. I would still imagine though that a domain of considerable quality will still sell very nicely.

I've always thought that both Acorn and Domainlore are primarily reseller markets. Where I think there has been a change is the type of domains that sell.

Many of the domains that I see listed on here are what I would class as 'domainer' domains that once upon a time would have been easy to flip on here and Domainlore for a quick profit. They hark back to the days when there was a big EMD bonus. Names like:

  • AirportCarParkingNewcastle (.co.uk)
  • HolidaysCyprus (.co.uk)
  • FlightsToAlicante (.co.uk)
  • CompareBestBreakdownCover (.co.uk)

Back in the day, these would have been easy sales to make for a few quid here or on Domainlore but I think everyone's a little bit more savvy these days. But who (domainer or end user) would now ever invest time and money developing such a name? This renders them worthless. That's not to say all EMDs are worthless, good EMDs and ones in the right niche will always have value.

I'm always looking to buy the best domains via acorn domains at low end user prices, and I've seen that many others are too. I think the value of uk domains has decreased quite considerably since i first joined this forum nearly 10 years ago. Not sure exactly why this has happened, although the google exact match change did have a large impact, then the uncertainty of .uk release impacted the value again. I don't think the prices have fully recovered, although the very best domains still hold their value.

The domains most affected are the ones that describe a specific category of product or service that isn't itself large enough to be the sole business of any company.

That flightstoalicante.co.uk is a good example - it would have made a great thin affiliate site seo play a few years ago, but that door's been slammed shut. What airline would want it? Their brands are all too strong. What travel agent? It's not a "sole specialism".

LondonTours.co.uk on the other hand is an example of a domain that describes an entire business's well... business. So it's plausible one of the companies founded around offering tours of London might want it.
