In the latest attempt to use up the Nominet surplus Nominet Trust are giving away £270,000 to charities to improve there websites.

Story: http://www.thirdsector.co.uk/news/1208144/nominet-trust-offers-grants-charities-improve-websites/

A good thing, some might say, my issue is, nowhere in the grant condition does it state they have to use a .org.uk (and the scheme is being run from a .com although the equivalent .org.uk is FTR)

When the UK namespace is funding the initiative it makes sense that they should use it promote the UK namespace?

Application : http://www.raisingit.com/grants

doesn't make sense

Charities don't have to use .org.uk, so why invent a non existent rule?

just following the guidelines at agreatplacetobe.co.uk

maybe then .co.uk or .me.uk but something ending in .uk?

the use of any of those would support the UK namespace that is funding the charity

A stated Nominet aim is to keep the .UK name as the primary domain extension used in the UK, when another part of the organization is helping promote non UK domains, it just doesn't make sense to me.

100% Nominet

Nominet aren't. The Nominet Trust (separate entity) is.

Which is 100% funded by Nominet

It is only split for legal reasons.

Last year I raised this with Nominet and they agreed to the point about using tld with UK and said they would contact Nominet Trust and request they consider that in future grants.
