Do you check who would have the right to the .uk before registering unregistered .co.uk domains (whether completely unregistered, or freshly dropped)?

(It's easy enough to check - just enter the .uk domain in the Whois tool on the Nominet site, and it will either say "None" or tell you which extension has the right of registration)

I was contemplating a few hand regs, and doing the above check I was able to weed out domains where the .org.uk would have gained the .uk i.e. not worth bothering about.

Basically, a domain isn't worth registering nowadays if you don't get the .uk rights.

Enough said.

I have also checked against our existing portfolio just to make sure. In a way the value of our holdings may have improved a little bit thanks to Nominet :D

I thought that was an extremely rare scenario yet you have found some so I'm wondering if I've misunderstood something. I thought only way org.uk got rights to .uk was if the co.uk hadn't been registered prior to cut off point. If that is the case then an org.uk registered without a co.uk being registered can't in my opinion be worth registering....

As I understand it rights don't pass to org.uk if co.uk drops or does it?

Am I missing something? Edwin you have an example or two as I'm beginning to think I have missed something?

OK - I'm a little confused about a domain I own.

It's mmug.co.uk - it was registered before the cut off (I know as I tried before to register it and it has inbound links etc).

It dropped and no-one caught it and I reg'd it later for a user group site, but the .org.uk will get the .uk?

Is that right?

On that page it says

"
If at any time you decide not to renew your existing .co.uk domain, the .uk equivalent will automatically become available for anyone else to register on a first come, first served basis.
"

So if a domain goes into suspended status and you have not applied for the .uk does that mean anyone can register the .uk if your .co.uk is in suspended status?

But drop caught domains get .co.uk, this domain was registered before that date by someone else.

CrossCutShredders.co.uk is one that I was looking at yesterday. Decided against it because the .org.uk would get the .uk. I don't know the history of the .co.uk domain, so it may have been registered in the past but from the rights tool it looks like it wasn't registered on the cutoff date and the .org.uk was.

Thanks Edwin. I think I get it now. I also don't know the history but would be surprised if the co.uk wasn't registered previously else why would anyone register the org.uk? My assumption would be that the co.uk dropped before the cut off point and if it had been reregistered before the cut if it would have qualified, but as it wasn't registered on cut off day then the org.uk gets it.

Not a scenario I had really considered, I'd just assumed that any registered org.uk would almost certainly have the corresponding co.uk (most people's first choice) also registered.

Sounds like it may be worth me checking the handful of org.uk's I own just in case they qualify
