I've added a domain to whitelabelflatshare.co.uk to make a site, but it's asking me to do this:

To use your own domain name you will need to create a CNAME DNS entry that points to "system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk"

Could someone please explain how I do something like that, I can't see anything in my Nominet account called CNAME DNS that I can see?

You cant set CNAME records through Nominet. They need to be created on your nameservers, so try looking at your registrars control panel to do this.

From memory, 123 and Krystal would both let you set CNAME records.

Unfortunately can't do it with nominet, will have to use a registrar.

Edit: You can definately do it with heart internet :)

Thanks for the advice, just registered on the pointhq.com site

I'm on this first page for adding a domain:

What do I put in that add new domain box at the top, the domain name I'm going to use for my flatshare site, or the CNAME DNS entry that points to "system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk"?

In that bit you put the domain you are forwarding eg systregflatsite.co.uk
Then on the next page you click the big green add new record and add your cname

Thanks Jim,

Will do that shortly and let you know if I get stuck again :)

I see they have 5 sets of nameservers listed for that site for their servers, do you need to add all of those in the Nominet control panel?

Hi Jim,

Next question :)

On the add record page a box opens with fields titled:

Record type (I set this drop down to display CNAME?)
Name
Data
Aux. Data

Where do I put the system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk url and what input in the other boxes?

Add at least 2 nameservers.
I would create two records:
Record type: CNAME
Name:
Data:system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk
Aux. Data:
and
Record type: CNAME
Name: www
Data:system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk
Aux. Data:

Thanks Nick,

But true to form with me and techy stuff, I've hit an error, selected CNAME for the "record type" and entered the system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk for the "data" field, but get this error saying I can't add CNAME as a root record

Ok, just leave out the one with the blank name. just add the www one.

@ Nick, thanks, it accepted it just using the www one, is that all I need to do now, just need to set the nameservers on my domain now to pint to 2 of these:

dns1.pointhq.com
dns2.pointhq.com
dns3.pointhq.com
dns4.pointhq.com
dns5.pointhq.com

Ive just had a look at what point is doing and its not going to have created the right record for you. I bet its created system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk.yourdomain.co.uk
Ill see if I can get hold of my contact at atech and see if there is a way to make it work for you.

@ Nick, checked it and yes, it's changed it from:

system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk

To

system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk.edinburghflatshare.co.uk.

Same with the other 5 domains I just added the same way.

Ill see if I can get hold of my contact at atech and see if there is a way to make it work for you.

Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated.

[edit]

The other names I added were:

glasgowflatshare.co.uk
oxfordflatshare.co.uk
manchesterflatshare.co.uk
cambridgeflatshare.co.uk
birminghamflatshare.co.uk

Right, should work now if you suffix the domain with a dot so create:
Record type: CNAME
Name: www
Data:system.whitelabelflatshare.co.uk.
Aux. Data:
You should be good!

Just noticed one other thing, if I go to any of the sites without typing www. in front of them in my browser, they don't resolve to the sites, any way to fix that? Only a problem I suppose if someone types them in, unlikely, but still.
