co. uk domain name registration

Hi

On the advice of someone from this forum I registered the name .co.uk as I already had the .com. I've now had an email from nominet. Visiting their site I'm a bit confused. Do I need to pay them any more money? I've never heard of this organisation as I've only ever registered .coms and although I'm British I don't live in the UK.

Can anyone help?

Hi Fiona,

Sounds like you've received your confirmation of registration certificate / letter. Nominet is the authority of all .uk domains. Very much like ICANN for .com etc...

For as long as you paid for the domain with your registrars you shouldn't have to pay Nominet. This is a standard letter.

The other thing it maybe is a renewal / invoice as you didn't renew the domain with the current company you registered the domain through. Does it state "Invoice" on the letter for £80 + vat?

Do a quick whois on your domain by visiting and see what the registration status and expiry date is.

People still get registration confirmations?

Its not a registration confirmation - its simply the standard email from Nominet asking new registrants if they want to create an account.

Its complicated and unneccersary - just delete it, its not required to 99% of domain owners.

Thanks for all your advice. It's a new domain not a transfer, so as long as I don't get an invoice for £80 I'm happy! Guess I'll just ignore it then.

It can be useful, though - and my advice would be to activate the account.

When you register new uk domains you can have them automatically added to the account, so you have them all "under one roof" for updating your contact details etc.

Plus, if you had any problems in getting your current ISP to transfer the domain to another TAG, you can put in an online request to Nominet to change the TAG for you (there is a small charge).
