I often register latest trends domains (mostly in my industry). I do believe that some of them are good investments. It might sometimes take a year or two but still...

Recently, for example, I hand regged two coms:

SiRNADesign
SiRNATherapy

Technology is very new, gets less than 1K global exacts.

Do you register same type of names? For how long you agree to "sit on the name" before selling it? What failure rate would you accept?

My personal belief, is that it is nigh in impossible to be "right at the start" and by that I mean from two approaches.

1. very difficult to Be The first out of the block. To my knowledge anything (future) worthwhile will have plenty of domains currently registered. Your niche should be in being able to apply A) your understanding of the future technology or subject application and B) more uniquely your understanding of domains to bring the two together. If i was to identify a market without some substance in the domains currently registered i would think long and hard as to why I think it's a worthy domaining area

2. I do tend to try and look at things from the "marketing" angle - The truth today is your not going to be ahead of any muti-million pound (or more) Take-to-market strategy by the players in that or any other particular field. I think a domainers advantage comes from watching a product or service enter the market. Watching the product or service adopt its early incarnations and then capitalise before it becomes mainstream.

I don't know the subject area your actually refering to but if companies involved in its development from the outset are not registering any similar domains - i would be wary of my direction. If on the other hand a brainstorm of similar terms starts to show " market aware" registrations (even just a few) Now it's time to get to work.

As for time-scale. I'd consider 5 years + to be a minimum holding period.

PS - No such thing as failure - Just a paid for learning curve

Thanks, appreciated!

In fact I do use my market knowledge in this exercise. Even now there is enough advertising for both terms with CPC at more than £6 levels. The problem is: the pharmachem industry has quite an inertia and doesn't move quick enough on the net but is quite fast in development / mainstream moves.

P.S. Companies do register domains in the area, but, let's say, one step behind.

I think we are uniquely privileged in being able to bring a bit of what we know into the domain arena. Those that talk about domains as some sort of "fixed asset" really blow my mind.

I'm sure "AndersonShelters.com" would have been a blinder 'In its day'.

I imagined (Around 10 years ago) that the small/medium-trader would dominate the local internet search market in the UK in its future incarnations. My Investments in that particular area for .couks are quite substantial - I consider it today to be a poor investment strategy. Not necassarily the wrong one, just one of poor foresight and timing on my part - and I adjust accordingly. Thankfully I got the better understanding of the global .com market to pay for the mistakes.

I suppose the bottom line advice is always follow your intuition but make sure your playing with at least two hands of cards

Pharmaceutical companies are making new discoveries, knocking out new things every day but they tend to go brand it’s easier simpler and more cost effective for them can’t see either of those ever being brand to be honest…

Time also depends a lot on the type of Technology also if it's product or service etc type time scales can be anything from 12 mths to years

I can see your point. But, as I said, this is my industry ;) Domains I have mentioned are very far from likes of Viagra or Panadol but very close to GeneSequencing or HeartBypass.
