In the modern art world, it will be billed as a rerun of David and Goliath. Damien Hirst has launched a legal battle to stop a struggling young British artist using his name on a "spoof" website.

The multimillionaire Hirst has employed the City law firm Manches LLP to act against Simon Phillips, a self-styled "internet artist" who owns the domain name www.damien-hirst.co.uk.

Hirst's legal team has submitted a dossier of evidence to the UK internet regulator Nominet, arguing that Phillips has breached his trademark and intellectual property rights. It claims that Phillips has committed an " abusive registration" with regard to both the name and contents of the website. The disputed domain name previously contained a potted history of Hirst's career, but now carries an image of a sailor dressed in red latex, with the slogan: "My arse is nothing to do with Damien Hirst."

I own another co.uk domain that he may be interested in! All used in good faith though, but that wouldnt matter a trickle in a DRS though.

What is it with all these so called "Renegade" artists......artist enough to pickle half a cow but not artist enough to see the humour in what this guy is doing.....Jesus how much money does the talentless prat actually need. I might register traci-emins-turd.co.uk and see how much dosh that makes me.

Guessing you are the bloke ;)

Love the letters - letter 1 refers to 'amazon screenshots of the covers of the books' total load of crap.

fight the DRS saying it is a web based art installation , probably lose, but good luck!

There is always damienhirstsucks.co.uk ;)

King Canute

my sites are my art.
no joking.
i never could explain to my dad why i did it.
it just did not make any sense to him, i spent all that time and made no money.
i tried to explain that years ago people used to paint.
it was the only medium, i was doing the same thing but with a new medium, only available in the modern world.
something that damien seems to have no idea about.
mumification/taxidermi has been around for centuries, it's old school.
my sites have been featured in art books.
all of the press have said i am an artist.
my sites are now officially my art.
damien and his people have just not woken up to the fact yet.
he is the modern day King Canute.
he can not stop the tide of the www

Hi Simon,
Good luck to you mate. I'm not normally into modern art, but everyone's allowed to express themselves. Those dicks like tracey emin & hirst have raped a living for years though & they take themselves 2 seriously. The old phrase is 'poacher turned gamekeeper', & they're the worst type. I don't see how anyone can stop you from having the domain. There must be hundreds of people in the country with the name, it's not trademarked (can't be) you are doing nothing illegal or fraudulent. I hope it backfires on him & you get a load more publicity for your work.
The way i see it is , see the glass half full, cos you have had quite a bit of publicity already. Get some more!
No doubt Nominet will back him & he will get the publicity he obviously seeking for his next wa** project. (an autobiography i think)
My dealings with Nominet have been really good & I find them very helpful & courteous. However when organizations, courts etc come to making decisions between working class people & rich people or coorporations, we know what happens. Why? Cos they've got no bolloc*s! Look at the sick sex sites & terrorist sites that are allowed to prosper, yet it is you they are picking on.
Good luck pal.

While we are on annoying pointless self absorded arseheads, do you guys remember Bill Drummond from the KLF ? Well if not, he was a member of a group called the "K Foundation" musical and artistic group. And what do they do with their success ? They burn a million quid and film it.....then turn it into art making unsuspecting dullards all over the world watch the idiots burning the money. Now I don't know if this is art or not (I could hazard a guess) but it is certainly one hell of a publicity stunt.

So...Bill Drummond has an exhibition of work in a bar in Leeds a few years ago, and for a laugh and some possible payout a bunch of likely lads liberate one of his paintings from the wall and hold it to ransom demanding a payment for liver exploration at the aforementioned bar.

This whacky fucker Drummond procedes to call the police and demand that they recover the "work of art", not seeing the funny side AT ALL. So tell us its not all manufactured now Drummond you tosser......
And whats this art genius doing now ? http://www.penkiln-burn.com/highlights/fs_drumgrey/drummondsgrey.html
He is selling tins of grey paint at £25 quid a pop, jesus....I might just buy one and make him drink it.

My point ? Yes I really should have one I spose....well my point is art is where you see it but it ceases to become art when its merely a vehicle for self promotion, surely that is the very opposite of the ethos of pure art ? OK ...will put my soap box away now, over and out.

Hi Nick

some good points dude. we'll never know if it was real money or not, either way when you can save some kiddies eyesight for 50p in India, it just shows how many arsewipes we have in the 'entertainment' industry when they're burning cash. want a publicity stunt? drop a million quid out the back of a hercules over africa or something. even that's a bit tastelessthough i suppose i dunno.
call me old fashioned, just play football, paint whatever. if you can make a nice living out of it, you're in heaven. the fortunes these dicks are getting though is sick. simple thing is vote with you're feet. but people won't.
cheers, Dude

Jonathan Robinson, Chief Operating Officer at NetNames (Register domain names online, with registration experts NetNames) comments, "Celebrities must wake up and realize they are just as susceptible to attack from cyber squatters as are big corporations. The Internet is fertile ground for domain name speculators and too many high profile individuals are still leaving themselves wide open to attack. By being proactive and registering and retaining control of web site addresses bearing their names, famous faces such as Damien Hirst could easily avert ugly situations like this."

Forgery claims hit Hirst auction

Hirst's notoriety and acclaim has added value to his work
Forgery claims have lead to the withdrawal of three Damien Hirst prints from a Sotheby's sale.
The pictures were in Hirst's trademark spot style which feature randomly coloured circles in a grid.

The genuine limited edition prints are worth up to £10,000 and have drawn attention from forgers who use the latest technology to copy works of art.

Sotheby's confirmed the images had been withdrawn and questions over their authenticity were being investigated.
