I thought Nominet had a new process to stop these phishing domains?

So long as NoDaddy get paid, they probably don't care!

What's to say the spammer didn't use a fake name and address (that matched, e.g. HSBC's own details). Impossible to tell of course because of privacy, but I suspect that may be what happened. That's why a validation process that involves matching information taken on faith isn't really much of a security check. More of a figleaf, something to point to to say "hey, we're trying...".

I thought nominet said something about putting names such as this on-hold until verified, using a list of keywords ?

That's what I thought too. Wouldn't you think terms such as 'lloydsbank' & 'hsbc' would be the low hanging fruit?

Still, Nominet have "verified" the registrant's address, so no doubt the rozzers will be putting the door in shortly!

The data validation has always been a mess and while it might "look" good from the outside it doesn't really do anything except cause us headaches
