I've got my eye on a .com name that is available that would be ideal for a development idea i have.

The .co.uk is owned and run by a small social club and they run a small message board on there.

Is it worth buying and developing the .com address without owning the .co.uk?

I definately think the name is worth it.

As long as the name is farily generic you shouldn;t have any clash of interest. If you after a UK client base it would be advantegous to have the co.uk = but the .com would be the natural type in for anyone trying to remember and you have global market with .com.
get your site up and running and then suggest their tiddleywinks club would be better with another domain name ;)
