I'm wouldn't call myself an ardent royalist and I didn't get to watch all of the celebrations. Everything is very doom and gloom right now though, so I was happy to see so many smiling faces and a bit of positivity for a change. Also it's nice to see people waving the union jack and not feeling like they're doing something wrong.

I'm not sure that it should be amazing that some people link the royal family in with their national pride. People have different outlooks on things. Nothing wrong with that. I can both see why people view the royal family as central to their britishness, and how for others they simply don't factor in at all. We of course don't all have to have the same views on life.

It goes without saying that forcing unemployed people to help out for free, then sleep under a bridge isn't right. That's more a sign of how businesses use people though not reall an issue with the jubilee. The supermarkets did this too for a while. It's deplorable.

When i am lucky enough to travel the world with my work, I am very proud to be British and know that i work with some of the best engineers in the world who are all British and leaders in their field of expertise.

I do believe that the diamond jubilee celebrations have brought some cheer to the nation at a time when there has been very little to cheer about.

The amount of money to stage the events is very small compared to the massive positive coverage the Diamond Jubilee celebration will have had around the world.

Lets hope the same can be said after the Olympics.

the olympics is a nightmare for londoners, everyone I know down there is escaping if they can for the duration

but olympics is same as jubilee
shoved down our throats and media will not shut up about it and block out real news will endless stories and column inches of this drivel

Conclusion: massive windfall for the hotel industry (much higher revenues, with far fewer rooms needing to be cleaned and serviced). Of course, the reality of the math escapes the press who simply go with the "fewer room bookings" headline.

In the Jubilee, you've got an event that over 1,000,000 people watched live (and hundreds of millions will have watched on TV around the world). To put it together required the help of tens of thousands (both paid and unpaid). It is hardly surprising - deplorable in this specific instance, but no surprise - that somebody somewhere cut a corner in a particularly nasty way. But to tar the other 99.9+% of people (or the organisers, who literally won't have had a clue what arrangements a minor sub-contractor made with a minority of its staff; that level of transparency simply doesn't exist) with the same brush is just ludicrous.

Basically if you take any massive undertaking (private or public) you'll find SOMETHING in some far-flung corner that "stinks" if you really dig hard enough. But it needs to be kept in perspective - if the "only" major issue of the Jubilee is 30 people who had to sleep under a bridge and otherwise got mis-treated by the company that offered them unpaid positions, then it's an incredibly well-run event and that take-away should not be marred by a tiny, fringe incident.

basic maths you say?
lower bookings, LESS people to spend money AND with less money in their pockets to spend on other things

the capital will be full to bursting point anyway as it always is for Londoners who have to live through it
unless you are one of the chosen ones in the vip lanes and paid for accommodation

also fewer rooms needing to be cleaned and serviced?
they still have the same amount of staff, they're not on performance related pay
the chambermaids get the same whether they clean 100 rooms or 65 and the hotel pays the same

hiking the prices just adds to the ripoff Britain tag too

That article is just putting a negative spin on everything. Good old journalism.

I think its a good scheme & things like this should be done more often.
The idea they worked for free is ludicrous. Those people have claimed unemployment benefits for a long time.
They had to rough it for a night - So what!
Was the taxpayer expected to put them in a hotel for the night?
Nothing wrong with having to work for your money, there is loads of work to be done out there & those stewards should be proud of what they contributed to the jubilee event. (in reality most of them probably are I would guess)
The welfare state is the biggest drain on this country & way out of control.
Its being abused & a lot of people attitudes need to change to get it sorted.

another thing to consider is if you put the bbc test card on for a few hours tonight a few million would tune into that lol
this is still a minority event getting pushed down everyones throats

the figures will be massaged up in the same way figures are massaged down for people that attended the antiwar march over Iraq, for example

bottom line a lot of people went into town enjoyed themselves without incident, that's a good thing
it was a good natured event with no trouble

now they're trousering a lot of taxpayers money and basically paying nothing or slave labour rates
families at the jubilee would have every right to think stewards were well trained, criminal records checked, diligent people etc
at the very least well fed, warm and clean! not kipping under a box under the bridge the night before and virtually unemployable
also clearly would have been a misery for the casula staff

when big crowds are right up close the river banks pushing you need to know a thing or two in crowd management and safety etc and you need good staff there

another thing is security is paramount for olympics coming up and we can't have vetted security firms pulling stunts like this as needs to be watertight.
we have the army etc grandstanding all over London parking up missiles etc. when in effect i don't think that is the greatest threat at all

But the article didn't mention any of that did it? LOL
I think all it was trying to do was to say that those workers were hard done by. Typical newspaper stuff.

They did point out however that the staff did also receive security training/license. (all for free)
Perhaps something they may also benefit from in the future.

I'm all for having thousands of police around for events like these , even if it costs as they are there to protect people and they are the best we have for the public

my big worry for olympics is they are taking on thousands of unemployed and school leavers for security at olympics alongside the professionals
and that is the big weak link in the chain
