www.diet.co.ke

I have just realised that this is available and wonder whether Coca-Cola has considered registered it.

I know it is not a particularly desirable extension, but from a marketing perspective I would have thought that they would have registered it for the same reason GMTV uses GM.TV. I went to Kenya a couple of years ago and Coca-Cola is everywhere! Every shop, advert, van etc features the logo. I believe you have to have a Kenyan TM and be a registered Kenyan company to register a .co.ke name, but that would be no problem for coca-cola.

Not sure about this 'domain hack' to be honest, I doubt they would choose it over coke.co.uk or even coke.co.ke ;) Also to me the whois states it's been registered since 2006?

I bet if you could reg this, Coke would have an hard time trying to get it off you, it might look like a trademark but it's a generic with a ccSLD extension.

God help anyone other than Coca Cola who puts a cola site on it :) They are the world's most ardent litigant over a TM issue.

I have just made a few whois searches and some say it is still available and others do not:confused: I posted the thread as I thought it was available, apologies if it is not.

I was not really interested in registering it, especially if there was a chance Coca-Cola wanted it as I know who would end up worse off. I was just making the point that it spells out their trademark and they haven't made use of it. If it was registered, however, then using 'diet' as a generic word wouldn't actually be inflicting upon their trademark. Anyway, I saw it and was interested in the possibilities.

It's very hard to buy coke nowadays, because the UK switched to natural gas years ago. They had a coke works in Northern Ireland until about 1980, but the gas pipes reach as far as Belfast nowadays. If you want coke, it has to be imported from the Eastern bloc. And if that Thatcher woman hadn't killed the coal mines, Coca Cola would never have managed to trademark the word - although I suppose it is an appropriate synonym, REAL coke being dark-coloured with an offensive taste. Perhaps that was why Coca Cola ran their "Real Thing" promotion about thirty years ago?
Overpriced and over here - WTH, I drink D&B, Irn Bru and Tizer myself.
Have you seen what happens to the muck on a penny if you drop it into cola?
The coin gets shiny - it's quicker than Scillit Bang ...

I'd rather go and eat coke, as Billy Bunter used to suggest disagreeable people should do.
