Is it just my luck, or are digital cameras incredibly expensive to repair?

I've got a Sony DSC-H5 and the button on it pinged off the other day. It turns out the pin below it had snapped. So I went into an independent repair shop to order a new button, as I knew somewhere like Jessops has minimum charges for any repair of about 80 quid. It's just a small piece of plastic that probably costs pennies to make in the Far East, so I was a little shocked with the quote of £71. It comes as part of unit!

I think I'll be buying a tube of superglue instead!

This stuff is especially made expensive to repair as manufactures want you to buy a new model sooner rather than later ;-)

are jessops still going?,my missus used to work there and my very good friend(haven't seen for 2 years) is/was the area manager,some of the stories she used to tell me about the people who listed cameras for sale online,they should have listed them for £1095,and they put them on for £195,she would have a call from warehouse saying "could you remove this camera because we have ran out of stock and the reply would be it's only been up for twenty minutes"and they always honered the price.

I had a cannon ixus and the lens went, just made a clicking noise and wouldn't open. Quoted more than the camera was worth to fix.

I have managed to find a company that supplies just the shutter release button for around 20 quid! It does seem a lot for a small piece of plastic, but it's better than a £70 repair, or the £250 to replace it.

There are a couple of cameras the same on ebay, so I'll keep an eye and order the part if they prove to be too costly.

The shutter jammed on my last camera and I was quoted £80 minimum service charge to take a look. The camera was about 4 years old and I'd only paid about £120, so in the bin it went.
