That should have been higher in respect of recent announcements...? Would imagine buyer is pleased at the pair...

It's org.uk, so the price was not that high. Not many people want this extension.

Looks like same owners as .co.uk

Businesses already spending money they didn't need to this time last week. I guess this kind of blows a hole into anyone's thinking that brand owners aren't going to be put to extra costs.

Don't want to bang on but under our proposals, this company wouldn't have just needed to spend £330. This was on a gamble, when .org.uk are certain of what is going on, prices will be 10 times this.

Now go multiply across hundreds of thousands of names.

What is going on?

A company paid me £2500 in February for a org.uk just to protect their brand with no sign of nominets proposals, so it does happen.

^ Not to mention the org.uk was a recent-ish drop.

Would be interesting to find out if they were actually doing it because of nominet though.

OK, so let us assume the buyer wanted to protect their .co.uk brand. What were the motivations of the other 5 bidders?

Someone else - who does not own the .co.uk - was willing to pay £320. This can't purely be for the gamble that the earlier .co.uk wouldn't apply for "Oldest Reg'd Applicant Gets First Dibs On Direct.UK", surely?

I think "metal" also lends itself to a fansite pretty well, it being a genre of music. So a .org.uk can be appropriate here, regardless of what happens with Direct.uk

The .org.uk was the earlier reg, so whomever bought it for a few hundred quid could pick up the .uk for a tenner or so, if it all goes ahead.

You are getting mixed up on the dates I think.

http://whois.domaintools.com/metal.co.uk - January 2010
http://whois.domaintools.com/metal.org.uk - November 2006

So under current proposal the .org.uk wins. It could be the .co.uk is buying here to protect against this?

I would assume the other bidders motivation was a speculative gamble on the current .uk proposal going through, so they're effectively bidding on metal.uk

Yes, sorry, I did mix the dates up. Possibly I was thrown by the reference to a [different] .org.uk being a recent-ish drop. Blimey.

Of course, this win isn't actually protecting a brand at all, it's protecting a speculative (tactical?) asset. There's no site at metal.co.uk and a Google search reveals competition from two companies who actually have co in their name!

Is there anywhere i can read more on this proposal for earliest registrant of .org.uk or .co.uk having first dibs on .uk?

Thanks Edwin,

Is there any date confirmed when .UK will come into play and do you have to make it known you have the .co.uk or .org.uk to get the .uk? or will domain owners get emails do you think?

Thanks

Jon

Probably voted on in the December board meeting and announced in January is equitable to the last scheduling around board meetings.

The consultation will close at the end of September 2013 and responses will be published in November.

I would guess Nominet must be ready to annouce a conclusion alongside publication of the responses. It would be very weird otherwise - essentially they'd be dumping a ton of documents on the general public with no comment.

Of course, I don't imagine we'll see .uk instantly even if the decision is to go ahead - so it's likely to be 2014 before the domains themselves become available.
