A company paid me £2500 in February for a org.uk just to protect their brand with no sign of nominets proposals, so it does happen.

^ Not to mention the org.uk was a recent-ish drop.

Would be interesting to find out if they were actually doing it because of nominet though.

I think "metal" also lends itself to a fansite pretty well, it being a genre of music. So a .org.uk can be appropriate here, regardless of what happens with Direct.uk

The .org.uk was the earlier reg, so whomever bought it for a few hundred quid could pick up the .uk for a tenner or so, if it all goes ahead.

You are getting mixed up on the dates I think.

I would assume the other bidders motivation was a speculative gamble on the current .uk proposal going through, so they're effectively bidding on metal.uk

Yes, sorry, I did mix the dates up. Possibly I was thrown by the reference to a [different] .org.uk being a recent-ish drop. Blimey.

Of course, this win isn't actually protecting a brand at all, it's protecting a speculative (tactical?) asset. There's no site at metal.co.uk and a Google search reveals competition from two companies who actually have co in their name!

Probably voted on in the December board meeting and announced in January is equitable to the last scheduling around board meetings.

The consultation will close at the end of September 2013 and responses will be published in November.

I would guess Nominet must be ready to annouce a conclusion alongside publication of the responses. It would be very weird otherwise - essentially they'd be dumping a ton of documents on the general public with no comment.

Of course, I don't imagine we'll see .uk instantly even if the decision is to go ahead - so it's likely to be 2014 before the domains themselves become available.
