Didn't underwear co uk sell on here for over 10k last week
I would rate sportswear as potentially better.

I think when you are talking large figures to end users it's not a case of flipping, although nice if it happens, you have to be in it for the long term.

You would rate sportswear as potentially better over underwear ? Underwear is a product which appeals to every single person in the UK regardless of gender, age, creed, colour etc etc. and they wear it every day vs sportswear which is only used by a percentage of people and also not worn every day and isn't bought anywhere near the frequency of underwear.

Perhaps this is why your opinion in this overall debate is coming across as 'wrong' to many as whilst I respect your opinion, I also think you are wrong.

If you're selling something where you know there is zero chance of the buyer coming out of the deal ahead, then you're ripping them off. You can try and put any spin on it you like, but it is what it is.

So if someone gave £10M for one of domains.. How much change would you be giving back?

If someone wants a domain and they're willing to pay the asking price, what's the problem? If they aren't willing to, it doesn't sell!

The problem is as I mentioned already. The buyer might hand over the cash willingly, but its a deal that stinks when the seller already knows the buyer can't do anything other than fail at developing it. So he not only loses the 4 figure purchase price, he loses all the extra time and money that went in over and above that.

I probably shouldn't have used Edwin as an example, but its hard not to when he's coming out with nonsense like in that Mortgages domain thread. Along with him being Chief Propaganda Minister for Shite EMD's

Frank, you're a large portfolio holder so put some perspective on where things are with you and tell us what price you'd have wanted for Underwear.co.uk four or five years back?

I'm obviously not frank, but for me as a buyer/developer that would have been worth £50k or so at some point in the past. My employee dropped out of the running at £10k in the recent auction. A few years ago I'd have snapped Franks arm off for the chance to buy it at 15-20 grand.

Impossible for me to answer that (without using hindsight) Sean as four / five years back it was an earning site which made me decent money (as an affiliate) and was number 1 on the big 3 search engines and the commission percentages were much higher than they are today too.

As a domain name alone, I had no plans to sell it at that time so it is really difficult for me to answer that actual question if you see what I mean ?

I think ultimately the people who are going to fall for it are just looking for a lazy get rich quick scheme and aren't interested in actually putting in some real work or effort. If they don't buy into 2104 emd's they'll only end up losing it somewhere else. Hopefully not Bitcoins :lol:

Yeah I would probably have said the same actually as a domain name alone and without the benefit of hindsight too. £50k is probably where I would have let it go in the past.

Sure no problem at at all as you are totally entitled to your opinion and difference of opinions is always healthy.

As for the whole EMD values debate, I have my own opinions of why the value of domain names have dropped so much over the past few years (certainly amongst the incestuous pool of domainers / affiliates / developers looking for quick easy money) and I can break it down as this :

- The power of emd’s was simply a case of buying a good emd, chucking some links at it, ranking it and make some money and usually making all your money back for the domain + more
- The value in .org.uk emd’s was ONLY the power of the domain name and nothing else
- Long tail 3/4/5 word domain names were even easier to rank and could be bought quite cheap so the route to market was cheap and easy and money was there to be made

Each of the above scenarios would all have had a ‘budget’ attached to it which could be broken down roughly as follows :

£5k budget = £3k domain name, £1.5k links, £500 website and you were number 1 for your term and making money every day

Nowadays a £5k budget doesn’t get you much in terms of ranking a site and certainly not enough power to rank a site in ways in which you could previously, so therefore the appeal to buy an EMD is much less

So now people do not invest in domains / throw money at them for future development opportunities UNLESS they have a solid plan behind them, as the easy money has now gone.

Solid EMDs with actual opportunities as a business (not affiliate / adsense etc.) will always have good value as they can always be monetised and turned into an actual ‘brand’ which is why names like underwear still sell and names like carinsurance may not.

I don't think anyone is saying that drinks is an awful name but the idea that Cadbury Schweppes are coming to buy it for six or seven figures is in my opinion misguided. I bought sportswear.co.uk for five-figures with that mentality and sold it last year for low four-figures when I realised I'd made the wrong call and it was unlikely to happen.

Dance is a great name and will carry industry prestige but I don't believe that marketing it would cost you any less than if you developed BoogieWoogie.co.uk which IMHO evokes much more emotion.

I've dealt with Mrs Jello in the past. Igal died a year or two back and I presume his family have taken over his portfolio or appointed someone else to manage it for them. They've always been hard to deal with, I bought Pontypool.co.uk off Igal for £100 at 00.30 on the morning that it was due to drop but when I tried to buy Llanelli.co.uk he wanted £0,000's which makes very little sense.

MarkB on the forum bought Recipes.co.uk from them so perhaps drop him a PM and ask who he dealt with and if he can offer any tips.

When I said sportswear was potentially better than underwear ( which I accept is arguable , though I hold my opinion ) I was responding to this post whereby sportswear was sold at a loss for low four figures and I was surprised at the decision to sell for that price ( though I know that often "circumstances dictate" ) The fact that underwear sold for 10k plus on here speaks volumes on the potential value of sportswear in the longer term under better circumstances.

A huge amount of end users would have no understanding of anything you're talking about, they don't know or care about it, they just want the domain that they've decided they'd like to use for their website, there is no plan to game google with it or get rich quick from adsense or whatever!

When the domains in question are 5 word emd's for one very specific product, there is no possibility of anyone but an affiliate developing it. They are completely unsuitable for end users.
