With £425 million in tourism income and 23 million visitors, the Cotswolds are an amazingly popular destination.

So I don't think the final price is particularly remarkable, especially given that the search phrase with "the" still gets 9,900 exact monthly searches. It's not a better domain for having the "the", but it's one of the few occasions when it doesn't hurt it that much because there's a "the" already associated with "cotswolds" in most peoples' heads - even if they might not type that "the" into the search engines. In other words, the domain doesn't look like a contrived poor-man's choice.

I prefer it to 'cotswolds.co.uk', although the jewel in the crown would have been cotswolds.org.uk

The "the" adds value imo. Most refer to it as "The Cotswolds". Congratulations Tony, I know this one took you by surprise.
