The only thing in a websites overall framework that can't be replicated by a competitor is the domain name (perhaps you could say content to some extent), but is this significant enough for developers/agencies to continue to seek out a 'better' domain to develop - and is there better awareness in what they could have.

Attempting to value a brandable domain name is a very inexact science.

I for one will not be registering lots of unique brandable .co.uk's and thinking I'm sitting on a goldmine.

With search engines providing most of the traffic to my sites, (unique) content is the most important thing.

Rather than "unique" domain, I'd go for "meaningful" domain as being the next important thing along with site design.

Meaningful could mean descriptive or a name that describes the site in an abstract/clever way.

If you are selling tyres what can be better than tyres dot com

That is the extreme of uniqueness .

Interesting to note that the pru are television advertising with vitality dot co dot uk as part of pruhealth dot co uk

How many end user's just don't understand domain name values.

If you look at businesses for sale how many would look more attractive if they had a really powerful domain name.

How many businesses understand that when you pay for a quality domain name it not only increases the business profile and exposure buy it also adds asset value to the business.

A £5000 domain name costs, at 10%, £500 per year to service, £10 per week,
probably the smallest weekly outlay in the whole business.
How many small businesses are looking logically at that quality domain name that would drive their business forward and add credibility.
