Reg'd a domain with a company over a month ago and they had all my details on file under my account. I went to move the domain last week to 123-reg and was shocked to see the domain name as the registrant. and not me.

Any one had this with anyone and is this issue best sorted directly with Nominet?

I did contact the company who did this mistake and they tried to fob me off with "it's common practice to use the domain name and I can easily get it changed". i know thats b****ks and he quickly made his excuses and hung up.

Cheers in advance

That's not on at all.

You should do us all a favour and tell us which company it was so we can all avoid a similar problem in the future.

You're right... it is what you said it is. I don't know of any reputable Nominet registrar who would say "it's common practice to use the domain name as the registrant" when it clearly isn't.

You are also right that the issue is best sorted directly with Nominet, in fact, it can only be sorted directly with Nominet, because once a domain name is registered, the registrar (or reseller) is not allowed to change the registrant field; only the registrant can change the registrant field through Nominet.

I'd be inclined to call registrant services on 01865 332244 or email them: [email protected].

Technically, the person or company who made this mistake has put you in breach of the Terms and Conditions (7.2) so the sooner you get this sorted the more secure your domain name will be.

Good luck with it.

I'm not sure if this is correct but I read that Streamline have done this in the past too.

As long as the Registrant puts their own name - or their company name - in the Registrant Field, there is no logical reason why any Registrar should do it.

Name and shame. Only 2 bob companies do this. Very shady. My niece had this happen but i eventually got it sorted. Slating them on every forum on the web was the only thing that made them act!

Stick to the bigguns or reputable people on here (if there are any?) :D

I wouldnt be suprised. I shout it from the hills all the time I know, but STAY AWAY FROM STREAMLINE. They are a waste of space!

I only reg'd 1 domain with Fast2Host.(last one too)

Prices are sky high too but thought i'd try them out, to my misfortune.
Will be calling Nominet tomorrow. Thanks for the comments

A small number of Registrars routinely register domain names in their own name without the knowledge or permission of their customer. This breaks the terms of the contract, because it can cause major problems for the intended Registrant. If you receive a request to register a .uk domain name for a customer you must register the domain name in your customer's name. You may only register the domain name in your or your organisation's name with the explicit prior consent of your customer. We might ask you to prove it, so you will probably want the customer's consent in writing to help if there is a query.

Check they don't get you to agree to it in the small print :)

186K are one company that stupidity reg domains in their own companies name. Shafting the customers interest when trying to sell or prove their the true owners. :???: Not down to policy, just stupidity!!!
