Ok, hopefully this isn't too stupid a question to ask!

What is your typical domain transfer process assuming you are a tag holder and are selling to an average 'joe bloggs' non tag holder?

I normally just execute a 'Registrant transfer' from Domain manager. However, the domain will still be on your tag unless they change it. I think its less than ideal for house keeping reasons to have domains left on your tag that you are not the owner of (especially when you dont offer commercial registrar services).

What do YOU do?

TIA.

Not a tag holder, but If im buying from a tag holder I always ask them to change the tag to my desired registrar ( i.e ENOM ) so i can do an internal transfer, which Namecheap then refund the transfer fee once its in my account.

This has happened to me a couple times and i dont offer registrar services so its a pain on the 5 associated names thing. I now make it explicit in dealing that they are responsible for changing TAG on transfer and theres a possibility of them losing if they dont (not that there is really unless i don't renew) I've found if they are go daddy, i get them to initiate a transfer in request at go daddy and then they get an email asking them to tell current owner to release to godaddy. Then I do a usual transfer request via nominet and they can change it. Gets picked up then.

I think on the last 4 occasions that I've sold domains on Sedo, the buyers accepted the transfers and left them on my tag.

On each occasion, I accepted the transfer handshake back to my tag, I then went to domain manager, selected the domain, clicked "release" in the top menu, type in DETAGGED and submit, that removes the domain from my tag and leaves it without a registrar.

Yes thats fine but Im talking about the punters who dont know what registrar they want to use. The aim is to not have it left in your own Registrar account.

Seems Nominet removed support for 'detagged' or at least it doesnt autofill as a Tag option and the downside is that it gives the domain registrant a potential £80 bill to retag.

Seems this wasnt a stupid question. I just found this thread, no clear solution and Nominet have dragged their feet to provide one.

In conclusion, it seems the best thing is to pick a random registrar like 123 reg, release to that tag and do the registrant transfer.

Theres a note from invincible in that thread saying not to use Detagged as it drops from the zone file ?? He was saying should mark as no longer required. Does it make a difference ?

No idea about what's supported, but I sold a domain on Sedo last week and set it to detagged when they left it on my tag again.

Some people have accepted the transfer 3 times for one domain, and still left it on my tag on 3 occasions, which is fecking annoying, so I asked Sedo for their email address and they accepted the transfer on that occasion.

Maybe it's easier setting it to no longer required, but I prefer to detag as it's a lot of messing about back and forth with Sedo, and the seller on there who you don't get to speak to.

There's a danger in using a random registrar as it means anyone who adds that domain name to their account there will wind up with control of the domain name.

I tell them before, during and after (if they don't do it) the transfer that they MUST choose a new registrar at the same time. Works for 9/10 of sales. A reminder will get me 60-70% of the rest, and the others I sent them a jogging email every week or so until they do it. Longest was 3 months, but they were epic at ignoring my emails because they must have had at least 10 by then.

When selling to non tag holders I've always just used the Nominet transfer option with either me or the buyer paying the £12 transfer fee (depends on how much domain sold for. If thousands I'm not going to worry about the £12 fee). When selling to another tag holder I simply release the domains to their tag.

Never had any users have problems with the £12 Nominet transfer before though. It provides an option to select a registrar.

I think the point is that sometimes they ignore/skip that option. That's what's happened to me a few times, even though I explicitly told them about it.

So in conclusion, I dont think I am missing anything. I had thought I must be. I'm fairly surprised there is not a Nominet supported option to release the tag to no tag (detagged), it seems so obvious and useful.

Nominet could certainly improve the transfer process so domains could be moved off a sellers tag. We're not tag holders but see many buyers opting for the 'choose same registrar option' when completing the nominet transfer. So the domain gets transferred and we're then trying to get the domain transferred to buyer's account at Daily, LCN, Fasthosts etc. Most of the time the buyers don't even have an account with these registrars and we have to ask them whether they really meant to keep it with the same registrar. Most of the time they want to use another registrar so it's all extra time and effort getting the tag changed. Also finding that a number of registrars are simply not allowing instant tag changes - so I'm sure that's another reason the buyer clicks 'choose same registrar' option. Why can't we have a simple system whereby the buyer gets the domain transferred to them and at that point the domain is removed from the sellers tag. Why should the seller be involved in all the hassle of tag changes after a transfer has taken place?

that's an innovative way of transferring. But don't think it would work with sedo sales where you have little contact with buyers. I assume you had some direct enquiries and guided them down this route. Of course the buyers will need to be in favour of opening an LCN account and you still might spend some time with certain buyers getting this sorted.

I always negotiate, so nothing automated, and part of this is asking what their chosen Tag to transfer to, so I always have it before hand. Don't really use Sedo as a seller :/
