Well it does make for an interesting read but i can't see anything coming of it really, seeing as the tags were registered to real people it does seem that no matter how obvious the "coincidences" are throughout it would would be unlikely enough to push Nominet to take any action.

Did anyone here suspect this at the time?

Yes, and other similar nepotistic relationships. Another one was the spurious appearance of a large number of tags under female names - some are still around and catching domains - which never appear on a nameserver and just sit there until months later when they've slipped through the consciousness of the domaining fraternity and end up elsewhere.

Interesting read, but nothing that a number of us from the prenom days of 2003-5ish didn't know/suspect.

It's a bit different now:
Nom has fixed the bugs in the dac/automation - or at least to the point that they're little/no advantage.
There's a fraction of the domains worth going for.
And 20-50x as many dac users.
