95% go to auction at the registrars auction partner, most of those places also offer dropcatching for the domains that do drop:

namejet.com
snapnames.com
pool.com

are the main ones.

Agreed also depending what it is and what registrar it is at some domains will get sold in pre drop as a prerelease domain.
Name.com offer this service and the ones mentioned above also have agreements with registrars to offer some domains pre drop.

GoDaddy is a strange one, I have had godaddy names go to snap, and their own platform, not sure why, but I'm 100% this happened.

Its possible the registrar changed between my DNA Pro scan and the name expiring but surely, such a thing would require a renewal.
