Can anyone advise on this

I like the name powerbabe.co.uk

However checking the TESS system it seems powerbabe is trademarked for pretty much any product they could possibly think of.

Does that mean it's a waste of time me trying to get but it and develop it as something else?

It depends on what you wanted to use it for. If it is outside the classes they've registered in then absolutely no issue.

Also even if a company has registered a trademark but never use it, their rights to that name will ultimately disappear.

If you wanted powerbabe to make a pinup calendar/site and someone already does that under this name then they probably have a claim to the name. In this case you'd need to think that if i registered it, and they later wanted it, what are the chances that I'd:
1. be in trouble (lose money)
2. be able to stay out of trouble by just giving it to them
3. be able to stay out of trouble and sell it to them for xx or xxx
