Easy Question

Need an experts advice, can links ever be bad? I am setting up a regional directory and am planning to post some of my other sites in every single category (will be around 1000) I'm doing this to try to generate extra traffic.

Could this have a negative impact on any of my sites?

Hmm, its certainly not an easy question!

In theory no links cannot ever be bad except if your talking about serious cross-linking between sites all hosted on the same server or IP range.

As long as your directory is going to be populated with other listings you should be okay.

Ok, though it would just be a yes/no answer.

Guess I'll just have to see what happens. The directory site sits with a different hosting company, so thats in favour. But there is likely to be few other sites in the directory at least for a good few months anyway.

Trial and Error I guess.

You should be okay with plain directory submissions (particularly as the directory is hosted elsewhere)

Just don't be tempted to link sitewide to other sites from the directory.

Do you know if its better to have url structure like:

recruiterlinks.co.uk/jobsincornwall/jobsinagne

or

recruiterlinks.co.uk/jobs-in-cornwall/jobs-in-agne

reason I ask is I used the first option and have been checking to see what pages have been indexed and in google if I search jobsinagne I come up, if I search jobs in agne I don't.

Also can anyone recommend a free piece of software that lets you enter in keywords and then tells you where you rank in search engines for that keyword? Might just do some trials and see which works best.

Hello again

A url with - is preferable but joinedwords are acceptable too, if its and established site i'd leave the URLs.

As for the tool for checking rankings, i have one on my site that i need to convert to my new layout, once its all done i'll post the URL.

Deffinately use the hyphen. If you look at Google search results, google highlights matching keywords whether there is a hyphen or not, but not all search engines are the same.
The separate keywords also make it easier for humans to read.
