.eu domains what do you think

Hi I'me new here and was just wondering what people think of .eu domains? I bought a few when they were released but let them go after no uptake on sales. Still have a few left, are they worth keeping?

They are if they are good keyword domains, because there is the SEO advantage of a keyword rich domain. Other than that the .eu extension is not doing brilliantly and is nothing to get over excited about IMO. I have developed the .eu that I bought, rather than trying to sell them.

This is just me, But I find the entire ".eu" domain a bit, well. Generic. .uk is very specific, and tells a visitor that the site is going to be related to the UK. .eu tells the visitor, the site is going to be related to, Europe. This could be anywhere in Europe.

If I remember correctly, .eu also had quite a difficult beginning. It was (and still is) marketed as a domain for Individuals and organisations within Europe, but this originally wasn't working out too well due to quite a few registrations from people outside of Europe being accepted from EURID. Basically throwing the entire idea of .eu being for people / organisations within Europe in the bin.

I'm not currently holding any .eu domains, or planning to hold / purchase any in future, If I did hold .eu domains, I would probably only keep them if (as mentioned) they were good Keyword domains that could be developed into something.

I don't know if too generic would be the right words, cause really, if it's a europe-wide thing, it makes more sense to have one domain instead of all the tld's

Not really, I mean which domain should I get assuming I am Mr Bob Frenchman with a car company... Do I go for:

voitureboutique.fr
voitureboutique.eu
voitureboutique.co.uk
carshop.co.uk ?

Lots of languages all under one domain = fail. See .asia...

You definitely have a point there. Who's fault do you reckon it is? Is it a bad model? Or is it simply that search engines aren't handling these multilingual sites properly?

I've got quite a few .eu as part of .com / .co.uk portofolio sets. In terms of value I'm holding for longer term gain.

I'm basing this on the growth of the EU as a global trading / political block.
As more countries join, and especially countries with smaller economies or international standing, larger companies and organisations in these countries may prefer to go with .EU rather than national suffixes such as .LT .LV, .PL, especially since many of the good .com are already registered.

I'm also interested in how other people see the .EU extension short and longer term.

While .eu can be "anywhere in Europe", it does make sense. For example, for a site selling things, shipping within the EU is affordable, thus presenting an advantage for people to buy and sell within Europe rather than other International countries. Also, many EU countries use a common currency, i.e., the Euro. People always prefer to pay using their own currency.

The ".eu" extension is a lot more coherent than .asia, for example, and has great potential.
