A recent investigation conducted by security experts has found that users of Wi-Fi networks in public places could be vulnerable to fraud and identity theft through their smartphones.

Public places expected to offer hotspot connections, such as railway stations and airports, could be targeted by fraudsters who set up bogus Wi-Fi gateways that mimic genuine providers. Fraudsters can steal data passing through the gateway from the smartphone once the connection is made, meaning that personal information could be stolen without the owners’ knowledge.
