does anyone know how you find out what linked sites a competitor has. I am wanting to know exacly how many sites certain sites and have and where they are coming from.

hahah i was using

link; url . co.uk

no wonder i was getting weird results :)

Its not very exact, but you can then go through and try and get links from those same pages which is useful.

Don't use a Google link query to find competitor backlinks, they only display a very small selection, Yahoo Site Explorer is far more comprehensive,

https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/mysites

For example, AD returns 191 links in Google,

link:http://www.acorndomains.co.uk - Google Search

In Yahoo you can see 85,000

https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http://www.acorndomains.co.uk&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=s

You're only able to export the first 1,000 results, if you need more there are paid services like SEOMoz Linkscape and Majestic SEO

Better to search in yahoo with this:

linkdomain: site url but do not forget to choose the option "Except from this domain". You will be able to form a fair concept about the inbound links to your website.
