For Nominet, launching .uk is all about the money

In my comment to the Nominet proposal, I said .uk should be free if it's simple being acquired defensively and resolves or redirects to the .co.uk/org.uk/me.uk website. If the .uk gets used in its own right however then it should be paid for.

Well I think you need to be a bit more realistic. If .uk is going to happen, its going to run as a standalone extension. So you're going to be paying for these domains. You might get a free period to begin with to sweeten the deal and get the anti- .uk protestors to calm down a bit... but you'll be paying in the long run.

That's one of the reasons why I oppose it.

I feel, that Nominet are just after the money, so giving away freebies may not suit them.

However, it will cause chaos, and make some people some money. If you got the .uk free, to a .co.uk you own, (I presume) there would be nothing to stop you flipping it right away? Even if it cost just a fiver, its not a massive amount.

So, you could get domain.uk to go with domain.co.uk, flog .co.uk one week, and the next .uk, either to the same person or someone else, and you end up (again) with all the confusion that is the reason why lots of people really don't want this. While Nominet fatcats sit on the manicured lawns sipping Pimms at Henley and probably claim it all as expenses.
