Hello

Lots of interesting information here, thank you

I suppose just a general question at first and I don't mean to be too personal, but I would be interested to know whether more people here deal domains as a part time hobby or full time occupation

Thanks again!

Hi Furry,

Welcome to Acorn.

I think most here are part-timers, but there are some full timers. Most of the full-timers will be developing sites too.

Just my best guess.

Cheers, Luke

I think a lot of people here do a lot more than just deal in domains.

Those definitely aren't the only choices. You don't have to do something full-time in order to do it professionally, for example. I guess it's a hangover from the "old fashioned" world of work to think that an "occupation" needs to somehow occupy all your time.

Plus, as Scott pointed out, domaining is just one of many arrows in a lot of forum members' professional quivers.

On the flipside, you could spend all week on domaining 8 hours a day (= full time) but if you're not sure what you're doing you're not going to progress beyond the hobby level (in income/success terms, anyway).

Domaining is an enterprise that rewards hard work, for sure, but it rewards expertise much, much more than it does raw hours spent "doing domaining".

You can make a living buying and selling domain but it would be dull…?.

We have been buying and developing for years… Occasionally we had the name, site etc but no buyers…? That pushed us into sourcing goods, suppliers, advertisers and calling people to sign for directories etc which in turn meant more contacts within manufacturing, business etc That diversity bought new customers maybe more than just selling the names would have …?

It’s worked ok for us but it’s not for everyone..?

If you get into domains later then expertise is a big advantage …Although I know of plenty that have little but just registered names at the beginning so are doing very well ….

Many thanks to all for the comments.

I hear there are almost 200 million domains now. It seems that in the beginning people must have done quite well, but I guess it can be a bit dog eat dog these days? Anyone who has stock from a while back must be in a great position.

Now that so many are aware of values, it must be hard? So many ads and promotions i see make it seem like a easy ride but I guess a lot of people find out that's not true. I am sure it takes a time, effort, knowledge and maybe even a little good fortune thrown in.

Will be checking around your forums.

Thanks again
