Isn't 'wholly descriptive' an all together more helpful phrase than this lame term 'generic'?

I thought the idea was that a wholly descriptive/ generic *IS* tied to a particular service or product. Isn't that the attraction of such a domain? Not being tied to a 'brand' or 'trademark' is the key, no?
