Ahhh, people still use IE? :lol:
If you look at my screen shots you'll see that I have IE, FF and Opera, it's good to back up your browsers

You have always been able to modify Google - how many search results per page, etc., Backgrounds is just another variation. There is no need to log in to change it - it'll probably be business as usual tomorrow.
It's more a ploy to get people to sign up for Google accounts - loads of kids for example will love this - than to change Google's usual white homepage indefinitely.
