Has anyone used Gumtree to promote a website? I've read through their terms & conditions and I cant find reason for them not to permit a listing as long as it doesn’t infringe on basic forum protocol ie, do not post any threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene or indecent material, violate any laws etc…

Would be good to hear from any forum members that have used Gumtree successfully to advertise a website...

I have never used Gumtree, but I have seen posts on here by others who have used it. and they say posting on Gumtree is good for search ranking purposes.

never put an email on there unless you want 1000s of spam every hour.

I've used Gumtree to advertise some of my DIY sites and stats showed visitors were coming from Gumtree to the sites.

So yes it's worth it IMO.

In my "dayjob" I work with beaty salons and hair salons (building websites, advising on marketing) - Gumtree seems to bring good response rates for local retailers/services

Cheers, Jon

Gumtree is good only for selling products or services but it is not approriate to advertise a website there.

Had a quick look at Gumtree but how would you use it to promote a website?

If you had a site selling cookers for example would you list a cooker for sale and link to your site, or place the ad in businesses?

Think I read in a different thread that it helps with PR and google-ranking but does it drive page hits?

I used gumtree to advertise some sites, and after about a year of doing so my adverts got removed. They didn't give a reason so I kept on posting. They finally sent me an email explaining that if you do post an advert that it should be self contained. That there should be no reason for people to leave their site to go to mine.

And whatever you do, do not put an email address on it. I haven't used it in a couple of months and still receive 3-5 Nigerian scams a day, countless "wonder" drug treatment email.

Another thing is that one of my posting boards gets constantly bombarded with comment spam, and still does as a result.

Also about a week after I started advertising my site, it got defaced.

But the traffic it brought through was pretty good, obviously the only reason why I kept at it.

It may be of interest to know that Gumtree has been owned by eBay since 2005 - I found that out a few minutes ago!

I have used Gumtree several times to get new sites indexed by Google quickly.

@ Marka, how exactly do you put your site details on Gumtree to get them indexed, as DW1973 asked earlier in the topic:

It is against Gumtrees rules to post site urls in ads, so how do you get them on there, unless people just spam the site and hope they don't notice any urls, and I don't like spamming

I have yet to try this, as I have only just found an excuse to do it - but how about advertising Gumtree being a way to get indexed? You can get Gumtree links from Commission Junction.

FreeTimersInter posted in another thread that links do not get deleted if the site is posted for sale in the "businesses for sale" section of Gumtree.

To be honest I had seen other ads in Gumtree with urls so simply created an advert and it was accepted. On reading this thread I then went and had a look at the posting rules on Gumtree and they could be interpreted in different ways. In the paragraph it essentially says that your advert should be self contained without the need to link externally, but the header says 'No links to other classified/ property/ dating/ job websites' - my sites are not in those categories so 'that is my defense your Honour'

I have posted ads in gumtree to sell an Item, and then linked to a site where you can also buy it to 'show' what I'm selling ;)
