I'm new to the domain name game and I spent some time studying the domain sales websites over the Christmas period to see if I could learn enough to try it out as a hobby or business opportunity. I've registered a few names but haven't started selling any yet.

The one thing I'm finding difficult to understand is the Domain Names Sales List. I've studied it extensively, but I can't seem to find any pattern to the sales prices. There's quite a few two-word-phrase names that have sold for upwards of five grand, yet a single four-letter dictionary word like "sold" was sold for only £1,000. Is that strange or what?

Still, I'm looking forward to learning a lot about domain selling from your forum in the months ahead, because it seems to be a lucrative business if luck and judgment come right.

Welcome to the forum :)

You're right about the sales lists. The sale price of domain names can depend on so many things, which can't really be determined just from looking at the sales lists.

Ultimately domains are only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it, but things that will affect the value are:

- Whether the seller is desperate to sell

- Who the buyer is (if a buyer smells a big company, the price tends to increase) and what they're planning to do with it

- Whether the domain gets any traffic and where that traffic comes from (ie type in traffic, previous usage traffic, search engine traffic, typo traffic)

Have fun

yeap sales are as random as some of the forum members :D

bascially as bb99 says the price is totally down to the individuals concerned. You have to register and sell what and when you think is right - everone has a different plan stick to your own - but take guidance everyone here has been where you are now - so ask

good luck

Hi will,

Welcome to the forum! As bb99 and charlie have mentioned, there are several metrics that go into domain valuation. However, often times the most prevalent is the buyer themselves. If you get someone who is really excited about a certain domain, it's not hard close a sale for a sum close to what you are looking for. Good luck with everything and feel free to let us know if you have questions at [email protected] or by PMing us.

Sincerely,

Sedo Staff

Care to tell us what the metrics are that you use, and of those which are the most beneficial/reliable?

and Hi will.

"sold" I reckon was hugely underpriced!

Aqls,

It seems that there's a lot of bad blood between you and Sedo, at least that's what I've gathered from the forums ;)
You do bring up what I think is an important topic for all domainers, which is what kind fo metrics we use in valuating domains. And since I don't want to see someone that unhappy with our product, I thought it'd prove beneficial to everyone if I walk the board through some steps of our appraisal service using one of your domains as an example. So basically I'm offering you a free appraisal. Now this obviously won't be a full disclosure of everything that we do, but I would like to highlight the more important things that we measure for you and for everyone else. And I will provide you with a copy of the appraisal when I'm finished. How does that sound?

reply posted in domain valuations area.

We are all interested in valuing our portfolios, not just me.

Your intelligent comments will be valued on some example domains that I may well have purchased.

Aqls,

Well, we can't give free appraisals to everyone of course! I just thought that I could show everyone some of what we're thinking when we're evaluating domains, and thought since you've had such a bad run of it with Sedo that we could appraise one of your domains and show you that we're not the monsters we're sometimes made out to be. This is an olive branch, but only if you're comfortable with doing this of course. If not, I can certainly take an example from someone else. If you are interested, just let me know what domain you'd like me to appraise of yours, and I can get started on pointing out some of the factors we consider.

Ok, Ash,

I've posted some domains in the domain research section where this stuff belongs.
