Better late than never. ;)

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure one of the mods will help with your query shortly.

In addition to this one, there are a number of decent sites available that will give you info about domain investment, although I'm not sure Admin would want me to link to them ... but definitely worth some homework.

Don't buy too many domains before you know what you're doing.

Rgds

:) Thanks for the welcome, it seems i don`t need to verify my account in order to post so it should be ok :)

I bought my domains for personal use, i never intended them to be for profit, so when i found out people buy them, that's when i figured it could be worth reading into :)

I do see there are guides on google, but i always find it better to learn of people first hand rather tan reading something jack wrote.

Wise words there.

It's easy to get carried away with buying up all and sundry at the beginning, you can get draw to domains that appeal to you personally. It doesn't however mean that there is any commercial value behind them...

Welcome to Acorn!

I think that refers to a few of the domains i bought, they may be worth millions in my eyes but worth nothing in the open market.

Number one Lesson learned

Everyone goes through stages like that, even the best in the game. Domain valuations in general are subjective and ultimately only as valuable as what somebody is willing to pay for it. In the right hands, a domain could be worth X, to somebody else, it may be worth considerably less.

The gift is in acquiring domains with commercial viability, but this as they same comes with experience and a fair share of trashy buys.

Research, research, research.

How is it possible to find out if you have picked up a commerciable site, it seems that domains get sold everyday, yet i`m told to leave a notice on my domain saying for sale which i don't think would work considering the volume of sales that go on.

Since domains are unique, if somebody wants YOUR name then pointing it at a site which says "This domain is for sale" is the most efficient way to make sure they get in touch with you. Of course, that's reliant on somebody wanting that particular domain name...

It comes with experience. You need to judge whether the domain has value. This is why generic and keyword heavy names go for so much, they are in high demand and have the most commercial viability out of all. This is why I said research is so integral, you have to have an understanding of your market and form strategies accordingly.

Welcome! What domains do you own??

95% of domains have no real value. Most good ones are regged by vultures like us at Acorn in the hope that they will have a resale value or development potential. Domainers are killing the internet. I've lost count of how many times I have visited a site via direct type-in, only to find a parked page. It really annoys me to find parked pages, and I've been in this game for a long time. I've also got lots of domains parked, so double standards really :)

Still shedloads of available hand regges out there worth money. Finding them is the key.
Don't believe the old-schoolers telling you you've missed the boat because you didn't reg porn.com in the 90's

You can easily hand reg a half decent .co.uk for a fiver, and sell it on 2 days later for £50. Not many industries with that kind of margin.

P.S. Don't go for quantity. Quality is best. I used to own many hundreds of .coms, I think I have about 50 now. Kept the good ones and dropped the rubbish.
