Hi all

great forum, quite enlightening and over my head some of it, hence I need a hand....

overview of problem:
I am a newbie to all this and have bought a few domains for myself and the family to set up and build sites for.
1 is with 123 reg, a few with namescout and also aw registry. This is confusing already to me but anyway - I want to host these say 10 domains somewhere , do I have to move my domains to where I host them ? will this cost ?
what would be the best thing to do and with whom ???

Any advice gratefully appreciated

Many thanks in advance

steve

Your hosting company can be completely separate from the company you used to register your domains. You just have to open a hosting account with a given company, in which you normally get an online control panel where you can specify the domain name(s) that the account will serve.

Then go to the company where you bought the domains, and in the domain name control panel, point the domain to your hosting. This is achieved by changing the domain name's nameservers to those advised to you by your hosting company.

many thanks, seems straight forward enough.
any recommendations for hosting companies ? and /or packages ?

does anyone have any experience of hostgator? seems a good price for a reseller package !

if you search the forum you will find lots of posts on the subject. It rears it's head quite often.

cheers. started doing that and got lost in a world of overtures and other such words I have no knowledge of ( as of yet ).

will keep plugging tho. ;)

hostgator is looking favourite at the mo.

Pro Web Hosting

Bluehost in the USA are cheap but lack support I think but have lots for the money.
I use Eurofasthost.com at the moment for my hosting and I get domains now and again from 123-reg.co.uk there supports ok too but I find eurofasthost very helpfull and its free 0800 phone support.

Even if your domains are else where you can change name servers to a hosting companies so you don't have to move your domains. (but it is best to).

The Pro package is £10.00pm you can have up to 10 domains on that so ideal.

Any more questions fire away ;)

Not sure if self promotion is OK, if not I'm sure the mods will delete this and warn me :) Feel free to drop me a PM with your full requirement, the links in my sig will take you to the company website, but most of our customers take a custom offering rather than an off the shelf package.

Whoever you go with you can just use the 123-reg control panel to point the nameservers to the host's dns box (the IP's will be supplied when you signup for an account). I had many domains with 123-reg and hosted on my box prior to getting my own Nominet TAG.

Unlimited bandwidth is not possible, anyone offering this should be bypassed when you make your decision. The nearest you'll get to unlimited is a dedicated server with an unmetered connection, this is in effect giving you a guaranteed pipe of a specified size to your server, however it's not a cheap route to go when starting out.

Your site's bandwith will depend entirely on your site design (how much in graphics / downloads) and how many visitors you will get. You will need to establish this yourself. The sums are quite easy - simply add up the size of all the graphics and text and markup (CSS & HTML) per page and then multiply this by the estimated number of visitors, do this for each page and you'll have a worst case usage (in practise repeat visits or graphics & CSS re-used on sub pages should be in the browser cache and search engines will only look for text so the the actual usage will be less). You also need to make an allowance for emails, control panel and your uploads for site maintenance.

Most decent hosts will have a stats package of some description that will allow you to see what your site is doing and how much of your resource has been used.

If your site is your main source of income, then it makes sense to pay a bit more and go with someone who'll not overcrowd their servers, so your site will get a good response, however if you're not fussed, then go with a cheap and cheerful host, however be aware that people charging very low prices are either putting more sites on their servers to pay the bills or have a lower wages bill (often a few quid a month in pocket money)

cheers golddigger, monaghan et al. Glad I found this site, as I would be cursing for england if I went with the first company someone mentioned. decision not yet made but it will now be a wise one. thanks again
