Right......A friend of mine manages bands and one of his bands is releasing an album on christmas day and it's going to be a free download.

He is expecting around 100,000 downloads of the album in the first month and a steady decline for the next 2-3 months, the album will have 12 songs.

How much bandwidth would he need? would he need a dedicated server?...

If anyone has any suggestions i thank you.:D

depends on the size of the file to be exact... however you'll certainly need a dedicated server if its that many.

That's a very serious server load. About 10TB in a month. Allowing for peaks and redundancy, a dedicated 100T connection will be needed.
That is very expensive.

Anybody who says they are offering un-metered, will start limiting you a long time before that.

I should be able to host the file.

Or your could consider putting it up on mirror sites to balance the load.

BitTorrent it?

How technical is the audience? Use BitTorrent for the initial flash crowd download?

One or two servers could then seed the crowd and get it going - and you can sidestep the vagaries of projecting download rates/cost of infrastructure - the crowd's upstream bandwidth feeds the rest of the swarm (if this is gibberish - go to Wikipedia).

Christmas day downloaders = fairly technically adept, or at least time on their hands....You can always point them at Azureus on the website download page.

Will ultimately reduce the number of downloads, but gives you an easy/cheap way of implementing.
