How do You apply this to domaining ?

He's half right.

But there's another way of looking at it which is pertinent to domains, seo etc (which was your question).

Every time there is a potential benefit deriving from eg
  • ownership of a domain
  • knowledge of how to develop it; and
  • knowledge of how to promote it

the domain owner can either publicise that benefit (ie create a vacuum as Seth Godin says) and then sell the benefit for money eg by selling the domain (once) to an end user who derives the ongoing benefit thereafter.

Or they can recognise that not everyone understands what they are missing out on and take advantage of that by making better use of the domain and the knowledge needed to develop it and promote it than potential buyers of the domain would be able to.

If most people in a marketplace don't understand the true commercial value of a domain, why let them in on the secret (other than having a short term view and an understandable need for cash)?

What do other members fink?

...effective marketing amplifies awareness of a problem or an opportunity, a problem the product or service solves or an opportunity it creates...

...or a problem that never existed in the first place. Look at the bottled water industry as an example.
