Probably a bit of a daft question this, but while i've transfered loads of .co.uk names to new owners and have bought loads i've never ever done a transfer of a .com name.

I wondered is it a similar process to buying a .co.uk - how does the owner transfer it, it it easy and is there anything to look out for when buying a pre-owned .com name (from a US owner)?

I've had a look on Google but i'm sure i'll get a much more informed answer on here from a UK perspective.

Many thanks guys,

Russ

A very basic explanation of the two options:

1) Transfer to a new domain company (registrar), classic transfer scenario where buyer wants to hold domain at a different domain company:

Domain transfers are usually completed within 5 to 7 days from the date of the initial transfer request. In order to speed up the domain transfer process, the Administrative Contact should ensure that the domain is unlocked at their current registrar and should respond with a confirmation to the e-mail immediately upon receipt.

The existing domain owner should make sure that the administrative contact e-mail is correct and that the domain is unlocked.

The prospective domain owner should initiate a transfer-in request for the domain at their Receiving Registrar.

The Receiving Registrar will send out an e-mail to the Admin contact, asking for the existing domain owner to approve the transfer request.

(Customer should request and enter the required authorization code.)

The Administrative Contact must confirm the transfer by clicking on the secure link sent in the e-mail. This approval must be done within 5 days or the transfer fails.

The loosing registrar sends you a second e-mail asking whether you want to cancel the transfer. If you cancel then the transfer fails. If you ignore this then the transfer must be completed within 5-7 days.

Losing Registrar releases the domain to Receiving Registrar.

New domain owner receives domain in their account at Receiving Registrar and can manage the domain there.

2) Internal Transfer at Same Domain Company

Also known as a "push".

If buyer has account at domain company where domain currently held, the seller can ask customer services to transfer the domain into the buyer's account.

Once in the buyer's account, the buyer can use the control panel to update WHOIS details himself.

This procedure is much simpler and quicker.

Thanks loads for that,

So its a bit more of a pain than your standard nominet transfer and it seems theres much more waiting before you get the domain.

Looks like escrow is proably better in a .com case

I wondered - if buying a domain from an American owner is there a popular escrow service or should they know sedo over there?

Cheers again

Russ

escrow.com is popular amongst the US domaining community. I expect a lot of them have heard of Sedo too.

np
good luck

back on topic
are you buying?
if so use escrow.com

what registrar is the .com at?
if at godaddy or enom or moniker it's quite safe to just get a push
whole transaction can be done and dusted in 3 days
choose 3 day inspection period if you're buyer
remember if domain is at godaddy, and theres an 80% chance there is as biggest registrar in world by a country mile, if you take a push you won't be able to transfer out for 60 days
and to be fair to seller he may not be happy about transferring away to you before he gets funds released as he doesn't know buyer isn't going to try a funny

if domain at moniker.com, they have their own escrow service
