Road-tax hike makes thousands of family cars almost worthless
Tens of thousands of cars will become almost worthless as a result of the decision to raise road tax on older models with higher carbon dioxide emissions by up to £245 a year.

Many families will find that they cannot sell their cars even though they are in good working order and no more than seven years old.

The Times revealed yesterday that the Treasury had quietly abolished the exemption from higher road-tax rates for cars that emit more than 225g of CO2 per km and were registered between March 2001 and March 2006.

CAP, which supplies the used car industry with data on residual values, said that many larger cars would be reduced to their scrap value because they would fall into one of the higher tax brackets being introduced for high-emission cars next April.

A Hyundai Lantra 1.6GSI automatic, registered in 2001, is listed as having a trade value of £850. But under the rules buried in the small print of last month's Budget, its road tax will increase from £210 this year to £300 next year and £430 in 2010.

CAP estimated that the road tax increase would cut 20 per cent, or £1,000, off the value of a 2001 Renault Espace 2LT Privilege people carrier.

Mark Norman, CAP's development manager, said: “When people find out that it could cost half a car's value just to tax it each year, its value will plummet. Many of these cars, particularly saloons, will be reduced to their scrap value. The sad thing is that perfectly usable cars will be scrapped, which could perversely increase overall CO2 because of the emissions from manufacturing new cars.”

It's more eco friendly to keep your 4*4 for another 10 years than it is for them to make you a hybrid, when you account for the factory lighting and materials etc.

What's the point?

it will blip briefly, but at the end of the day they have positioned it NOT to stop people buying, but simply to gouge more tax out of us, medium-long term I don;t think it will have any effect at all.

The whole thing stinks, it's just additional income tax masquerading as an environmental initiative.

You can do 100K miles per year if you've got the right size engine at no road tax increase. If you do 5K miles per year and your engine size / emission output is caught by the new legislation and has doubled your road tax it's erm.. tough sh*t you're good for it, your fault for driving a nice car under a labour government.

agreed. it'd be cheaper for us to have 2 hatchbacks ratehr than 1 people carrier. Don't how that could EVER be considered good.

Insurance company given me a brand new Audi A4 3.2lt quattro that only does 20 miles to gallon the way I drive it - do I feel guilty...? ... nah.....

enjoy it while you can I say.

My car is worth 4% of my bike and I will be paying 500% as much road tax for the car. The wife uses the car. I use the bike. Go figure out this crazy stuff. Let's all vote Labour and give them yet another chance to sort it.

Anyone that shells out cash on an expensive car or something that drinks fuel like its going out of fashion is either flush with cash or mad.

You can get from A to B a variety of ways, all of them do exactly the same job.

As I tell my teenage brothers, a flash car may help you pick up the ladies but if you dont have a flash pad to take them home too, then you might as well not bother.

oh yes, house before car, everytime. I can't believe how many Astons, Masers, Rang Rovers, 911s, M3s etc. are parked on the road outside peoples 2 up 2 down houses in and around London.

Surely the £60-£150k would have been better put towards a bigger, better placed house? Although in the current market, maybe not :)

Its' not the car or the pad that puts off the ladies, just the wife when you get them home ;)

it's nice to see labour doing there bit for families, taxing them for needing an mpv,i have two girls 4 and 5 so they need booster seats, and i have one on the way so within the next couple of years will need to fit another booster seat by law you cannot put a forward facing booster seat in the front so what next?,can you buy a ford galaxy with a 1.3 engine?

If you are buying new/nearly new get an smax rather than a galaxy. We moved form old style galaxy to an Smax, and it feels much more carlike and less lollopy around corners. Go for the 2.5T (same engine at Focus ST) and it'll also outrun most otehr cars :)

sorry i was giving an example i am still waiting for my kia sedona to be delivered, but yes the s-max is league's away from other mpv's but still a bit pricey.

Ive just bought and old banger for £40 pounds thanks to all the big sales Ive had on here recently :)
