hyphenation or extra word in a domain?

Me again, sorry to be a pest but if anybody could advise me if I'm on the right track that would be very kind.

I am thinking of building a site to sell (probably using amazon affiliation for now) a range of products which retail for around £100.
The niche is highly competative but the the exact search term I'm focusing on has medium competition and 3.5k exacts (not broad)

I believe from research on Acorn domains that is better to reg the exact search term as your domain name,
but the domain is gone, so I can either hiphonate the 3 word term or add a word to the end.

Eg
solidPlatinumCarrot is gone ( so is the plural, which has higher competition)
so what's best
Solid-platinum-carrot.co.uk
or
Solidplatinumcarrotplace.co.uk

I discounted mySolidplatinumcarrot as i've read on this forum that the search term should be at the front of the domain.

What are your oppinions and Does this endevour sound possible/profitable for me as a learner??

Sounds like a good plan to get started.

Yes I personally think, despite the scepticism around Panda, there is still benefit in an exact match - or at least the keywords in the domain.

I would also agree if you do need a suffix then stick only on the end rather than the beginning. This is my own experience but of course others may have found success the other way (I.e prefix)

If you can get this to work and claim some of the 3.5k matches and a £5 per sale commission it could earn a few pounds. Rinse and repeat the concept and start building that empire!

One thing to perhaps point out is who are the competition. Are they the big boys (Amazon themselves, Argos etc....) competing with these for Top 3 slot to take some of the traffic can be more difficult - even with an exact match (but not impossible )

This is a really good question and one that newishbies like myself consider.

After quite a bit of research I opted for hyphenated names over prefix as I deduced that the big G will ignore the hyphen

As I am starting from scratch literally it was more about learning to build sites, my names are less competitive than yours by the sounds of things and have ranked quite well so the plan seems to have worked. I am currently having a nightmare trying to get a competitive hyphenated name indexed and initially I thought it was the hyphen but on reflection it's more likely the robots file so time will tell if the hyphen over prefix works on more competitive names.

From the sounds of things you are taking the right approach in terms of actually thinking it through so I am sure you will be successful.

cc976a. Many thanks for your encouraging reply, it's great to get advice from someone with experience in these matters. I see what you mean about the competition, it might be best to cut my domain teeth on a softer target.

Aiden Roberts. Cheers for replying. You also have been asking many good questions on the forum that I've been learning from, keep up the good work. Interesting to read of your endevours.
The hyphenated domains also look neater to my untrained eye, and if G does ignore them then thats ideal, but I read on acorn about long-tail domain names and think the extra word at the end could be used to further focus G's beady eye on my niche.

I read on this thread ( http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/affiliate-marketing/87114-amazon-stores.html ) about a Store Builder, which builds a store for you.
I was intending to learn about wordpress and learn seo over the next few months, but this store builder comes ready to go and SEO optimised. I wonder how good the SEO is and if it would save months of work? It does cost though, and I will need to learn it all eventually anyway.

I considered storeburst but followed advice and opted for learning html and css instead, I am glad I did because looking at the current posts re storeburst it looks like G has de-indexed all the sites.

I am still having fun and games with wordpress but I am slowly getting to grips with it (my latest effort is in my signature), I need to learn about design and seo but I have had a few sales so am fast becoming a wordpress fan.

Before becoming a domainer I did quite a bit of content writing and learned the importance of unique content, niche's and long tail keywords, these alone will give you a head start over millions of sites so go with it because it sounds like a plan to me.

Hi Aiden, this may have been the first thing you've done with new names and maybe you know all about it, but have you submitted your sites to Google for indexing? This can speed things up a bit in terms of getting your names into the search, esp. if you don't have too many cross-links between your names so no established referrer site has told Google that your new name exists.

I have pretty much done all I can do now submitted sitemap, submitted url, installed wp meta roboys plugin and as if by magic it indexed but without being cached?

I am going to leave it alone for a couple of days and see what happens when it gets crawled, I actually didn't know there was a difference between indexing and caching it or maybe I am just confused.
