The figure given represents the amount of monthly searches based on how you have set your keyword tool up and has nothing to do with the extension com/net/org.
The keyword tool can be set up for countries, and even areas and granted some extensions will rank better in certain places but this has nothing to do with the amount of search results returned as it doesn't know what extension you have got.
If I have misunderstood your question then I apologise.

When doing this, make sure what you register is as generic as possible.

You'd want jewellery.co.uk but not jewelry.co.uk for example. On the other hand, jewelry.com would open up the market a lot more compared to a somewhat less valuable jewellery.com.
