Domains were not used by the wider public when I was at school and who is to say that they will be around in 10 years time?
Kids would be better learning about mortgages, loans, financial control etc than worrying about diluting the small domain/affiliate pool even further.
As a side, have you ever tried to sit someone down and explain just what it is you do and how they could do it also? Maybe its my teaching style or its just impossible to explain!

I expect you could take an internet marketing course at college and these will increasingly include affiliate marketing.
I'm always surprised that more people don't try affiliate marketing, but I guess it's hard to make a success of.
It's always good to learn something that can help you make a living, but domaining is a specialist subject and I can't see it going to mainstream education.

also you have to suck it and see
you normally have to make a lot of mistakes along the way, and lose some money like anything else to learn and realise whats best
plus everyone has niches and things change almost daily in this space
its hardly an exact science!

The fact is that anyone keen enough could set aside a couple of weeks and read and read and read (eg the general and newbie forums here, some of the helpful bloggers etc) and at the end of that process they would end up with a very solid background in domaining.
This will only work if A) they are willing to put in the effort and B) they understand that domaining is NOT a get-rich-quick scheme!
I guess that 95% of the info is out there for those willing to dig for it. Certainly wouldn't take the several
months or years that a university course would...

Agree and disagree. I think a couple weeks of solid reading would be a good start but until you dip your toes in to buying, selling, developing, parking... whatever it is that you decide to do with domaining, one will not have a solid grasp on the concept until some real experience is applied.
100% agree that to succeed you can't jump in thinking it's a get rich quick scheme.
It can be taught at a basic level - in the same way that property investment / speculation can be taught.
What can't be taught is the ability to think a little differently from the norm and to have the guts and energy to pursue a plan to success.

Agree - domaining is can be taught as with just about any subject, it's the acumen that is required that is either there or not.
Anybody lucky enough to have a backgound in either Advertising, marketing, merchandising plus a good understanding of computing coupled with business and sales experience has just about everything in place. Domaining then becomes a very natural additional string. Often the rare but most pitiful sights and posts on domain boards come from those trying to work outside of their own areas of expertise. These posts/requests etc usually always include the wording of "I think" somewhere in the post.
Domaining isn't an exact science but, neither is it guess-work
