I own Backpackers.info - Backpacking Information on Backpacks, Backpackers, Backpacking Guides, Backpack Forums it is page rank 2 and says it is banned .. weird.

It certain seems that you have been banned on that domain, even with a solid query like backpackers.info backpack - Google Search.

Page Rank is indepenant of listing, which is why you can have page rank but no serps

Oh well not stressing over it yet, I have just made a site out of it, before that it was parked, thats maybe why.

There is a big difference between banned/having a penalty and not indexed which these tools do not differentiate between.

In alot of cases totally agree.

Given that a search for 'backpackers.info' reveals links ON other sites and the time the site has been online, its more than likely banned, but not absolutely.

Check the logs, if googlebot has spidered the site, in the previous months and still nothing then its getting conclusive.

If it could be it and looks like it, smells like it, feels like it, and tastes like it, then it probably is it! as my old journalism teacher used to say

In a recent email i sent to google (about a site i wanted to buy but the owner said was banned from google), they said that website's don't get banned, but accounts do.

About being banned from the index, I think there's a process to get relisted.

I'd definitely sign up for google webmaster tools and add a site map. Plus try and fix the reason if possible why the site was removed from the index - if it's a content reason.

There is no process for being re-indexed.

What happens is, when the sites content changes enough that the bot doesnt see it as 'black hat seo' (the numero uno reason) or 'duplicate content used on multiple domains' (numero dos reason). It then gets moved up a list, the bot has to see its now clean, and gets added to a 'check again' list, and some weeks or months later the bot will return, it all clear, it moved up the list until its added back into the index. This is of course speculation because only a handful of people (who all work for google or have worked for google and signed a non-disclosure know for sure).

I am lead to believe google also bans IP addresses or known offenders webservers, so you should check your IP. Google also uses sorbs and other spam databases in their equasion, so you should check if the domain is blacklisted with the spam agencies, and inform them of a new owner and ask them to remove it. Adding an SPF, closing open relays etc will also help with this.

Also google take into account other websites that link to a website (a'la page rank), so you have to bear that in mind too, kinda annoying that if a cracks website decides to link to you site either as a type or by scraping, it impacts your site.

Unfortunately its going to be a long process over anything from weeks to months.
