keywords and google rankings

Ok gents, it has been a while...

Having finally got a website off the ground I am concentrating on SEO. A few questions:

1) If i search my area/type of site on google, then copy some of the relevant the keywords from other sites ranking highly (e.g. the first 5) - will this help?
I assume these sites have done the research as to the most searched terms?

I have edited the title's and used my best domain names... anything else I could do?

The keywords you use should reflect the content of your site, cutting and pasting other sites keywords would make you the internet equivalent of a cowboy builder!
