Tired of cleaning rootkit viruses from one the younger generation representatives PC (Thanks MSN Messenger - well done) and constant moans about "Having an IT pro in'da'house who doesn't care... etc." decision was taken! Out goes the Micros**t and in goes Ubuntu.

OK, I was really nice and caring, I didn't put RedHat just an overfriendly Ubuntu ;)

"What is THAT??? :("
"Your new PC "

No sound is coming out from that room for an hour... Is this a good sign? We'll see

How did this end up? Always interested in peoples experiences with Linux, especially when they have come from a Windows background. I've used it as my main OS for ~5 years now.

I put together a basic pc from some old parts I had laying around recently.

I installed Lucid Lynx from a usb stick and was very pleasantly surprised.

I've had all sorts of problems getting a wireless pci card to work and found the support a bit lacking an not very user friendly, but what can can you expect from a free piece of open source software.

All in all, very good though.

Wireless support is notoriously dodgy with Linux.

I enjoyed kubuntu when I used it :D never been much of a linux fan though, ill stick with snow leopard.

To be honest for me LIN / WIN competitiveness is non-existent. For example I can report back that my trick worked. I now hear words like repository, console, WINE, etc. And most importantly "Wow, I never knew THIS can be free "

I've done tons of IT support / coding before for both platforms. And wireless problem, hmmm... often just one EXCLUDE is enough to solve it once and for all.

But just between us (whoever worked in IT security would understand) I always have second thoughts before putting any sensitive info on the Net if I access the Net from Win based PC.

My respect to *nix originates from the Uni and scientific research years when Sun's Sparcstation was (and IS) unrivalled.
