Location of host server

This is a newbie question, does it matter where your server is located when it comes to SEO?

For example if I have a .uk domain name and host it on a server located in the US will this have a negative impact on SEO relative to hosting it on a UK server?

With a country specific domain you can host it anywhere and it won't matter, you'll appear in that countries version of Google.

Ie. .co.uk domain will appear in Google.co.uk

But host a .com (.org / .net / .info etc etc) on a NON UK server and if you are targetting UK traffic and rankings you'll have difficulty getting into google.co.uk
