Hey Helmuts, good question. I had the same curiosity, so I took a closer look. From what I can tell, the valuations seem to be based on a mix of domain metrics things like keyword quality, length, potential brandability, and maybe some search volume data. It doesn’t look like there’s an official breakdown published on the site, though.

yes, search volume seems to be included.. At some point we will be also working on our own valuation tool that we can include in the live auction feeds, though Looky looks good, really Good!

Wow, looks perfect!! I'm curious > how do you calculate the valuations?
hello, helmet

The valuations are based on historical market data along with some established data points such as length type of domain in a sort of category if you will, and other types of data and then we formulate a sort of score based out of 100 and using the historical data along with this score, we Determine an auction price and a marketplace price.

Hi, sounds like you have thought out lots of details. May I ask: did you buy the market data (sold domain prices?) from namebio or some other resource?

Hi,

It's not purchased no, what we really wanted to do was use DomainSalesHistory.uk, but when we launched there was no API available. At present I think Chris is developing a limited private API, not sure if he plans to expand into a full API, but that would be very useful, but as mentioned at the time of inception we had to work with our own sort of algorithm as well as some external data.

We also developed LookyBot to source new sales data for us on a nightly basis, which is also used toward valuations. The valuations themselves tend to be very accurate. Not 100% of the time, but enough to give a sense or an idea of how to price a domain. It's not intended to be a golden rule, but more of a guide to help people decide on pricing. There is no real world way to value a domain name, because mostly every domain purchase is emotional and has some sort of human element that cannot be ascertained artificially.

wuhh.. DomainSalesHistory.uk looks really neat!! Chris is light years in front us us having a similar idea developed.. love it

yes, you are correct that there is no "real world" (the word is spot on) way to develop domain name valuation formula.. way too many variables and approaches..

Yes, absolutely. It’s the same in any industry really. The market determines the value, and it’s full of human beings who are unpredictable and emotional. Chris is a very good developer, and he’s extremely good at his craft, even if it’s a little side hustle. He’s done very well with it. You know, he considered giving it up a few months ago, but we urged him along with others to carry on. We think the work he’s doing is very important for the industry, as there isn’t really a source of information like it.
