Malware / Spyware removal ?

avoid Norton like the plague....very bad reputation and far too bulky

I am online all day every day and use AVG free, keep Winows updated, run an occasional Malwarebytes scan and use a bit of common sense regarding sites I visit and touch wood seem to be trouble free.

Same here. I get on with AVG really well, dont use anything else. I think as long as you are sensible and keep windows updated then should be no problems. I have been virus free for years now.

I purchased AVG about a year ago, because the price was so good, with a few more features and apparently a more robust protection, but the purchase was more out of loyalty. Felt a bit bad using it for free when it works so well for me

I also use AVG free, seems to be the best in my experience. Along with tweaknow, malwarebytes and spybot to regularly clean up. Never really have any issues.
For a linux distribution I've been looking at http://www.linuxmint.com/
Seems to get a good writeup. I've not tried it yet but will install it on a spare hard drive to play around with it.
