Help Needed - Mental Health Project

I'm considering my first proper project which would be to build & develop an intuitive resource site for anyone concerned with mental health, whether their own or someone elses.

I'd probably reg a new domain for this & the one I'm looking at is a 2 word search term with over 27,000 local exacts. Available extensions are .eu .me.uk .gb.net & .uk.com. Is there an obvious candidate for this project?

I've never built a site so would need assistance with this. An idea of costs (send by PM if preferred) would be really helpful

I'd gladly add my own personal content to the site and would also need occasional help in getting additional content up.

Much as I hope to help, reassure or just point people the right direction, I would also need this site to generate an income. That's where you come in again hopefully!

So, anyone interested in this challenge?

Lastly, if anyone could guesstimate an income range and timetable that would be great.

Thanks for reading,
Billy

If your target audience is specifically the UK I would typically suggest using the 'org.uk' extension for this type of project rather than the extensions you have considered.

The '.me.uk' extension, although not exactly ideal, would be the best extension of the four you are considering (should you need to use that exact search term). You have various options: including approaching the existing holder of the more appropriate extensions (org.uk and co.uk) or considering other closely related search terms.

I can give you some further advice via pm if you so wish.

Great post.

Thanks for the advice,

You suggested going for a .org.uk, would that be preferable to a .co.uk for this particular project?

I was looking at the 2 word search term due to its simplicity and widespread usage among people with plenty of experience with mental health issues and those completely new and thrown in at the deep end. I'd be happy to look at other domain names for this if there are ways to still get the site noticed.

I do have MyMentalHealth.org.uk in my rather tiny portfolio but I'm guessing that the "my" in front of the main search term would cause me problems.

Thanks again, I'll do a bit more homework!

When reading this I remembers I bought mentalhealth.me.uk a while ago (not developed)

I thought the .me.uk made it sounds more personal

Great post Billy and thought provoking.

If you have a the right keyword domain name with 27,000 local exacts then I would go with it especially if it's a term that is used in that area. The only fly in the ointment might be the competition for the term given the non availability of the other extensions.

Alternatively I am guessing an offer for mentalhealth/me/uk might be on the cards or if you fancy a punt I have tribulations/co/uk for £40 which might work?

Whatever route you take I wish you every success in this important area.

Regards

Aiden

Glad I provoked some thought!

Can you please clarify your comment about having the right keyword domain name? The search term is definitely widely used but the popular extensions have already gone. I gave examples of the remaining extensions & have a couple of votes for .me.uk as the best of the rest.

Billy - I like MyMentalHealth.org.uk, (pretty sure I had this too on one of my domains free to reg lists I consider, I'll check, lol). I feel this would work well and perfectly fits the .org.uk.

Don't worry about exact matches for this kind of project (IMO), your content will generate that if written well and if in future you have user generated content (e.g. a forum), the search engines will lap it up. :)

Good luck!

I'm really glad I started this thread now, the answers have already been really valuable to me.

I'm getting quite excited to see if I can get this off the ground now. I'll start drafting specific ideas for the site over the next day or two and then...... Who knows?

So, is there anybody up for assisting me in getting this up & running. I suppose I'm looking for site design & layout advice, SEO/ranking tips and crash course in development. Ideally, this and any other "services" I need would be provided by one person or company. Please feel free to reply here and/or by PM.

clarify my point.

If you have the keywords domain name available that match the 27,000 local exacts then I would go with it even on a me.uk extension. This kind of site will stand or fall on it's content, usefulness to it's users and promotion so IMHO the extension is a minor point. In time the other exts may come available and these can be redirected to the site.

Good luck with the project
