Am a newbie to domain names, wanting to try this out after being told by a friend....a new venture for me.....!? Hoping I can find out more and make a few bob on the way !

Yes, but make sure you do lots of homework first (reading here) before you start buying domains. It will take you a while to figure out what's valuable.
